Position Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications towards a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the Assistant Professor level, to begin Sep 1, 2025. This position was open based on a university strategic initiative and a collaborative program between Mathematics and the College of Engineering, for the area of cyber-mathematics or mathematical foundations on cybersecurity.

The department seeks candidates who engage in internationally visible scholarship, establish externally funded research programs, positively interact with the existing research groups, involve both graduate and undergraduate students in their research and outreach, and show excellence in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Applicants must demonstrate ability to work on interdisciplinary problems and collaborate with faculty
from multiple Engineering departments.

The ideal candidate would be performing research in mathematics and/or statistics, with applications to one or more of the following areas: cybersecurity, scientific computing, machine learning and artificial
intelligence.

About the College

Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of 15 departments, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The College has more than 10,000 students enrolled representing more than a quarter of the overall Texas Tech University student population while maintaining a 22:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

About the Department/School/Area

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Texas Tech is one of the largest departments on campus. It includes 48 tenured and tenure-track faculty lines, 6-8 postdoctoral associates each year, and an annual average of 15 instructors and lecturers. Since 2015, approximately 150 graduate students have been enrolled in the department every year, with 100 of them being supported full-time as graduate part-time instructors, teaching assistants, or research assistants. Our faculty, postdocs, and graduate students actively engage in various areas of research. We are committed to achieving significant research and providing high-quality education to our students. We are passionate about our students' success and research topics.

Major/Essential Functions

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service. Other essential functions include the following:

• Establish and maintain a rigorous research agenda.
• Work with multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams in Mathematics and Engineering to seek extramural funding to support research and practice.
• Advise and mentor master's and doctoral students.
• Supervise graduate student research (including serving on thesis and dissertation committees).
• Actively participate in service for the program, department, college, and university committees.
• Help the department build a strong program to be commensurate with the University's mission as a Hispanic-serving institution.
• Teach courses in person and online.
• Collaborate and cooperate with colleagues to fulfill the needs of the departments and college's strategic goals.
• Develop and foster partnerships with school districts, community partners, other colleges, and universities for engaged scholarship.
• Promote a collaborative, socially just environment within the department, college, and university.

Faculty Qualifications

• An earned doctoral degree in Mathematics, Statistics or related STEM sciences
• At least 2 years of experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate level courses in Mathematics or Statistics
• Qualified candidates should have an established record of publications and external funding in their field or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

• Applicants who have strong records of scholarship supported by extramural funding and a very strong peer reviewed publication record are particularly encouraged to apply.
• Visibility: The candidate should have a strong professional network evidenced by their reputation in the field.
• Research: The candidate should have a proven record of research scholarship.
• Teaching: The candidate should have demonstrated strong commitment to teaching scholarship and practice.
• Service: The candidate should have demonstrated a commitment to service and engagement at institutional and professional levels.
• Mentoring: The candidate should have demonstrated a strong record of mentoring of students, post-docs, or junior faculty and staff.
