Executive Medical Director- Hospital Based Specialties (Critical Care)

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership for site medical directors; contributes to the development and achievement of service line strategy. Develops annual business plans for areas of accountability to ensure alignment with area, medical group and regional strategy in conjunction with operational dyad leader. Responsible for the achievement of clinical quality and patient experience goals.
  • Directs the resolution of highly complex or unusual business problems. Plans, organizes, and directs hospital physician and advanced practice clinician (APC) operations and services across multiple medical group practice environments.
  • Decisions are guided by service line strategy, has broad impact on the sub-specialty or program results.
  • Leverages data to develop and execute strategy to achieve organizational goals and objectives for assigned medical group markets or specialties across the system. Develops and implements change.
  • HR Management responsibility: Resolution of physician contracting issues. Adjudication of issues with medical staff. Involvement with employment issues related to physician behaviors or performance. Coaches, develops, and guides direct reports- Including the development of their site medical directors and clinician teams. Accountable for hiring site medical directors. Achieve defined retention standards for the division.
  • Engagement responsibility: Lead and support engaged clinicians an environment where the clinicians are connected to the organization's purpose, each other, and those they serve. Contribute to the development and implementation of engagement plans.
  • Strategic planning responsibilities: Workforce development, succession planning, identifying new lines of service.
  • Growth responsibility: Responsible for establishing standards for operational performance, patient access, referral management and adhering to terms of contracts. Partners with regional CMO/service line leaders to develop and implement strategic initiatives for care model innovation. Partner with Population Health to achieve organizational goals and benchmarks associated with patient outreach and care coordination.
  • Operational effectiveness responsibility: Partners with dyad partner and regional directors to provide input on the prioritization and deployment of capital; advocates for the infrastructure required to meet operational accountabilities and brand standards. Hold direct and indirect reports accountable for accountable for achievement of target metrics. Develop and lend support to achieving budgetary targets assigned to operational leaders.
  • Works closely with HBS leadership to develop integrated culture among operational and clinical teams. Promotes a cooperative approach to developing and maintaining relationships between practicing clinicians and administrative teammates and leaders. Developing and implementing standards in scheduling and site staffing based on volume and quality metrics. Establishing system wide councils to address such things as clinician education, safety, practice transformation, patient experience, etc.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Medicine and Surgery, MD-DO license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
  • Board certification in critical care AND 5+ years of progressive leadership in a multi-site critical care practice or large academic practice.

Education Required:

  • Doctorate Degree in Medicine

Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 7 years of physician leadership experience in a large healthcare system with experience in managing complex, high-volume issues with proven problem-solving, innovation and execution abilities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical care and superior performance in physician leadership roles which includes quality and utilization management, clinical effectiveness and outcomes, outcomes measurement, clinical staff development, case management and clinical protocol development.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of current trends in health care delivery, including the development of alternative delivery systems, care management, managed care, physician practice models, physician payment issues and access to health care.
  • Advanced knowledge of and skills in developing, planning and implementing long term strategies and plans.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills in organization, planning, and the development of long-range plans.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to successfully interact with physicians and teammates at all levels throughout the organization and within the community. Demonstrated success in developing positive physician relationships and collaborations.
  • Excellent skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, negotiation and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite or similar products.
  • Willingness to maintain a part-time medical practice.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Will generally be exposed to a normal office environment.
  • This position requires travel so will be exposed to weather and road conditions.
  • May be exposed to human blood and body fluids, so therefore must wear protective clothing as required.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical and explosive hazards.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, smell, touch and hearing.
  • Must be able to operate all equipment essential in performing the job
