The McLendon Clinical Laboratories is currently recruiting applicants for a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in the Cytogenetics Laboratory. The MLT supports clinical laboratory diagnostics by performing laboratory testing or performing activities to support testing within the various areas of the Cytogenetics Lab.

This technician will work as a generalist and cross train as needed in areas including, tissue culture, slide dropping, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Training will be provided, however, some experience with traditional cytogenetic techniques is preferred. Excellent communication and troubleshooting skills and the ability to work in a team environment are essential.

This technician will also play a role in supporting the overall goals and objectives of the Cytogenetic Laboratory, McLendon Clinical Laboratories and UNC Health.

Key functions of this position include accessioning, autoclaving, preparing solutions and harvesting samples for constitutional and acquired diseases. Preparation of slides for the analysis of chromosomes and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Performance of quality assurance and quality control for preventative maintenance on lab equipment.

The Medical Laboratory Technician will be guided by existing professional guidelines and certified Cytogenetic technologists.

Hours: Monday-Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm with rotating weekend and holiday coverage responsibilities.

Responsibilities:
1. Instructs patients in preparing for tests that require fasting. Answers patient questions regarding the tests.
2. Maintains equipment and investigates problems with equipment.
3. May assist in teaching Clinical Laboratory Science students and Pathology residents and training of new employees.
4. May monitor daily operation of laboratory section or work area.
5. May participate on teams or individually perform special projects/assignments.
6. Performs a variety of routine and standardized tests using standard techniques and equipment. Prepares specimens, resolves specimen problems, and performs analytical tests. Labels and stores specimens.
7. Prepares reagents and assists in the preparation of standard and control materials. Monitors levels of reagents and assists in maintaining supplies.
8. Records results of tests and maintains records. Provides test results, reporting deviations from the norm to supervisor or ordering physician.

Education Requirements:
* Associate's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician, Chemical Science, or Biological Science.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* If Associate's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician, then must be ASCP or AMT Board of Certification eligible and must receive BOC within a year.
* If Associate's degree in chemical or biological science, Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP) or MLT (AMT) Board of Certification (BOC) required.
