We are currently seeking a Mortgage Underwriting Supervisor to join our team. The Underwriting Supervisor will work closely with Underwriting leadership to help manage priorities of the team. They will also evaluate borrower financial and credit information in tandem with property valuations to inform lending decisions, using established underwriting guidelines. Our underwriters will work closely with all members of the production team throughout the process to bring loans to closing.

In addition to daily underwriting oversight duties, the Mortgage Supervisor also works on any special projects relating to the underwriting process, job aids, procedures, new product launches, and various tasks as needed.

Key Accountabilities:

Assess Loan Requests and Maintain the Bank's Risk Appetite

    The Mortgage Underwriting Supervisor is expected to apply critical thinking, judgmental analysis, and independent decision making in conjunction with automated underwriting systems, secondary market and/or product-specific guidelines and standards.
  • Review mortgage loans to be sure both accuracy and quality are maintained to stay in line with rules and regulations governed by mortgage industry standards.

Work Closely with Mortgage Sales and Operations Staff to Support Client Experience

  • This is a team-oriented environment, and the Mortgage Underwriting Supervisor must work closely with ONB Mortgage Loan Officers, Processors, and Closers to process residential mortgage applications as efficiently as possible, while ensuring an acceptable level of credit risk is maintained in the Bank's held mortgage portfolio.
  • Time management and the ability to prioritize assistance on individual files within the workflow are critical
  • Working closely with other ONB Mortgage staff to maintain service level agreements for timely decision making to meet regulatory guidelines as well as client expectations.

Provide Guidance, Support and Share Knowledge with Other Mortgage Staff

  • Lead through an ever changing mortgage environment
  • Utilize your past experience to help drive efficiency with our current process and help develop team members.
  • Assist by answering questions presented by the ONB Mortgage staff relating to general policy guidelines and loan scenarios.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • HS/GED and 10 or more years experience; Associates degree and a minimum of 8 years experience; or Bachelors degree with a minimum 5 years experience; Serves as a mentor and coach to other Mortgage Underwriters. Train team members and assist with daily questions. Assist Mortgage Underwriting Manager in managing pipelines and adherence to SLA's.
  • Effective supervisory and management skills in the Mortgage Lending space.
  • Proven track record of leading highly productive teams, building team culture, and leading through change.
  • Tenured mortgage lending experience with thorough knowledge of mortgage products.
  • Expert level of knowledge of all underwriting functions - Strong organizational, managerial, and problem-solving skills - well-developed customer relations skills - Exceptional interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of credit policies, credit analysis, procedures, and philosophy.
  • Strong analytical skills in relation to evaluating risk to company goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated analytical and risk analysis skills.
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills.
  • FHA/VA/USDA and CRA lending experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of state bond programs and down payment assistance programs a plus
  • Experience with Encompass LOS platform preferred.
