Brief Summary of Job Duties

Residential Operations is part of Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). Residential Operations maintains properties consisting of residence halls, single student apartments, family student apartments, and dining commons serving over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. In addition to providing service to residents, Residential Operations maintains facilities that include conference centers, office spaces, and short term lodging and housing facilities. We welcome over 20,000 conference guests annually. Under the general supervision of the Grounds Sr Superintendent or Grounds Asst Superintendent, the Groundskeeper is responsible for maintenance of grounds and landscape duties around university owned residence halls, dining commons and residential apartment complexes. Incumbent will comply with department safety and illness programs as implemented by supervisor and/or co-workers. Interacts as a team member with sensitivity towards a multi-cultural work environment. Promotes customer service programs in the Grounds unit to residents/clients. Assists with the development and maintenance of a work environment that is conducive to meeting the mission of the organization. Responsible for completing job duties in a manner that demonstrates support for HDAE. Initiates communication directly with co-workers and/or supervisors to improve and clarify working relationship, identify problems and concerns and seek resolution to work-related conflicts. Participates in staff training and development workshops, retreats and meetings as determined by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in grounds maintenance
  • Ability to perform minor repairs on small equipment.
  • Some knowledge of irrigation and drip systems.
  • Experience with the use of tractors, small lawn mowers, edgers, power sweepers, roto-tillers, and chainsaws.
  • Must be able to follow oral/written instructions.
  • Will be working wit a diverse student body and staff. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others as a team.
  • Must have effective communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an institution and/or residential setting such as a University Residence Hall, Hotel, Resort or School.

* Maintain a valid CA driver's license, a clean DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program

* Satisfactory conviction history background check

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 70% - Landscape & Installation: Operates equipment such as small riding mowers and hand mowers, edgers, power sweepers, hedge clippers, roto-tillers, blowers and chain saws. (At times may operate lawn mowers and other equipment where small children are playing.) Maintains and cares for plants, shrubs, trees, hedges, flowers and lawn areas. Mows and edges lawns, trim and prune shrubs, hedges and trees, irrigating lawns and flowerbeds. Installs new landscaping and turf. Unloads plants, digs holes for planting, prepares and fertilizes plants and lawn. Sprays landscaped areas with pesticides and herbicides. Removes weeds, grass clippings and dead flowers as needed. Installs and performs ongoing maintenance of automated irrigation systems.
  • 20% - Repair & Maintenance: Removes trash in parking lots, landscaped areas, bike racks, under stairways, around lawns and shrubs, gardens and other outdoor areas. Gathers and hauls debris, loads/unloads truck and electric off-road vehicle. Lifts/ carries sacks of cement, fertilizer and lumber, prepares areas for installation. Tools and/or equipment utilized to perform essential duties, including but not limited to: Augers, rakes, brooms, shovels, picks, hammers, (carpenter type & sledge) wrenches, saws, (pruning type), pruning shears, ladders, lawn mowers, gas edger, weed whackers and leaf blowers. Performs minor adjustments to equipment as instructed. Repairs and maintains sprinklers and irrigation lines as needed.
  • 10% - Safety & Training: Participates in staff training and development workshops, retreats, meetings as determined by unit. Affirms and implements the departmental Educational Equity Plan comprised of short and long term objectives that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff or success in a multicultural society. Develops, promotes, adheres to safety rules, standards or techniques as an integral part of business. Adheres and implements the 20-minute work rule for all repetitive work tasks. Affirms and implements the departmental "Strategic Plan" designing goals and objectives that relate to the vision statement.
