West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine seeks a new Chair of Pathology, Anatomy & Laboratory Medicine in collaboration with West Virginia University Hospitals/University Health Associates. This is an exceptional leadership opportunity for a physician with an unwavering commitment to excellence in clinical care, education, and research.

SUMMARY:

The Chair of Pathology, Anatomy & Laboratory Medicine (PALM) leads the Department's clinical, academic, research and service missions. As such, the Chair is responsible for the quality of clinical, educational, and scientific programs within the Department. The Chair is further responsible for the overall leadership and management of PALM, setting and advancing the Department's strategic direction in alignment with Organizational goals.

Reporting to the Chancellor and Executive Dean of West Virginia University Health Sciences Center (HSC), the Chair is responsible for managing the Department, which includes planning, budgeting, resource allocation and program development. The Chair will hire and retain outstanding faculty and staff to support the needs of a growing Academic Health System.

WVU PALM is a rapidly growing department consisting of faculty in Anatomic Pathology (AP), Clinical Pathology, Anatomy and Professional Programs. The Chair will have the leadership skills needed to manage all organizational missions, to lead PALM through periods of growth and change in a collegial manner, and to successfully leverage the many collaborative opportunities that exist.

PALM provides key clinical services in both surgical pathology and laboratory medicine across the state. The Chair will work with the Vice Chair of Pathology to deliver comprehensive and high-quality surgical pathology services within a subspecialty-based system. Clinical AP services are committed to growing Digital Pathology capabilities that will be housed in a new laboratory facility. Clinical services are supported by state-of-the-art laboratories including cytogenetics, electron microscopy, molecular (NGS), and flow cytometry laboratories. The Chair works with the Vice Chair of Laboratory Medicine to ensure testing services meet clinical needs.

The position requires a strong commitment to teaching. The Department provides education to 1st and 2nd year medical students through a dedicated Pathology course and offers a Post-Sophomore Pathology Fellowship for students interested in pathology as a career. The Chair supports the Program Director of the Pathology Residency Program, and Directors of the Hematopathology and Cytology fellowships. The Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Division offers degrees in Medical Laboratory Science, Histotechnology and for Pathologists' Assistants. Dedicated faculty in the Division of Anatomy teach extensively across the HSC and manage the Human Gift Registry.

The Chair will lead the planning and development of the Department's research portfolio. Working across the HSC, the Chair will form highly collaborative teams to grow the Department's scholarly activities. Faculty research activities are supported by the PALM Tissue Bank, Research Histology Laboratory, Brain Bank, and the Rapid Development Laboratory.

ALLOCATION OF TIME: Clinical 30-40%; Administrative, Educational and Research, 60-70%.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

EDUCATIONAL:

  • Works collaboratively with the Vice President & Executive Dean, Associate Deans, other Department Chairs, Program Directors, and faculty to bolster HSC educational programs.

  • Supports the Residency Program Director and Fellowship Directors and ensures programs meet the standards of the Office of Graduate Medical Education.

  • Maintains accreditation of all educational programs, both pre-doctoral and post-graduate.

  • Promotes faculty recruitment and retention to ensure adequate faculty support for all PALM educational programs.

  • Mentors PALM academic faculty and assures continuing faculty development activities in education.

  • Provides annual summative evaluation with regards to the promotion and tenure cycle, as well as ongoing formative evaluation and feedback.

  • Teaches medical students, residents, fellows, and allied health professionals as appropriate.

CLINICAL

  • Shapes clinical programs and champions technologies that will enhance patient care.

  • Partners with leadership to grow areas of clinical excellence.

  • Determines the qualifications and assesses the competency of all members of the department and coordinates and provides oversight of all medical staff as it relates to credentialing, re-credentialing, and privileging.

  • Collaborates with clinical services to support a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

  • Ensures that clinical standards for the department are consistent with current professional guidelines, accreditation standards, and the mission, vision, and values of WVU Medicine.

  • Monitors faculty, trainee, patient, referral, and employee satisfaction in accordance with organizational goals and guidelines, while maintaining clinical excellence.

  • Collaborates with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Quality Officer to develop and monitor continuous performance improvement.

  • Participates in clinical service, including service within the candidate's subspecialty.

SCHOLARSHIP

  • Defines and leads the PALM Department's research and scholarly activity strategy.

  • Enables faculty to develop and enhance academic and professional development.

  • Provides appropriate mentoring for academic, scholarly, and professional growth.

  • Encourages and rewards grant funding in education and training, basic, translational, and clinical research.

  • Seeks interdisciplinary collaboration in research and scholarly activities.

  • Supervises faculty research focused on practice changing contributions and scientific importance with a focus on high impact journals and national/international presentation.

  • Promotes development in voluntary national academic organizations.

  • Participates in scholarly activities in the candidate's area of expertise.

FINANCIAL

  • Oversees departmental finances with regards to the clinical practice and educational mission.

  • Creates and executes an appropriate departmental budget, with the assistance of Departmental and Hospital Administrators, and other key personnel.

  • Provides recommendations and regular updates regarding equitable compensation models for faculty and staff working in the Department.

  • Makes recommendations for annual capital improvements and monitors future fiscal needs of the department.

HOSPITAL

  • Oversees clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory operations, capital purchases and compliance.

  • Contributes to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of services.

  • Works with leadership to monitor physician/faculty productivity, quality, and physician/faculty/patient/staff satisfaction.

  • Serves as spokesperson for the department, advises leadership, and acts as an agent for implementing the policies and procedures of the hospital.

  • Coordinates with Hospital Administration, other Chairs, and Medical Directors to optimize the delivery of care to patients.

  • Ensures that pathology services are consistent with current professional standards, as well as with the mission, vision, and values of WVU Medicine.

  • Collaborates with quality and compliance officers in performance improvement projects, turnaround time, sentinel event reports, key performance indicators and established metrics and dashboards.

  • Participates in medical staff affairs and is a member of the Medical Executive Committee

COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND OUTREACH:

  • Seeks collaborative relationships with pathologists, clinicians, and administrators at system hospitals.

  • Maintains active professional relationships with former graduates practicing in the state and region.

  • Participates in local and regional leadership forums and societies or delegates these responsibilities.

  • Remains active in local, state, regional and national professional societies

STRATEGIC PLANNING:

  • Maps and executes the next phases of PALM Department growth.

  • Participates in active and ongoing strategic planning for the department, which is congruent with that of the School of Medicine, the Health Sciences Center, the University, and WVU Medicine.

  • Assists in setting of personal and departmental goals with measurable outcomes.

OTHER:

  • Participates in the Council of Chairs and Executive Council of the School of Medicine.

  • Serves on committees and councils as assigned by the Dean, CMO, hospital CEO, other ranking officials, or as peer elected.

  • Promotes and participates in endeavors of philanthropy on behalf of the Department, School of Medicine and University.

  • Serves in other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education, Certification, Licensure, and Experience:

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from an accredited medical school.

  • Certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology, and if certification is time limited, enrolled in the American Board of Pathology Continuing Certification Program.

  • Hold or able to obtain medical licensure in the State of West Virginia by start date.

  • Current medical school appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level.

  • Demonstrated experience with established evidence of achievements in clinical care, education, and research.

  • At least ten (10) years of clinical practice experience and a minimum of three (3) years administrative experience in an academic medical center or large healthcare system preferred.

  • Experience with clinical program administration and graduate medical education required.
