Senior Electrical and Instrument Technician

Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Department: Operations

Location: Woodbine, Georgia - Onsite

Position Summary

This position is responsible for coordinating the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and general/preventative maintenance of electrical and instrument equipment at the hydrogen liquification plant located in Woodbine, GA. This role requires excellent electrical and instrument aptitude and a high degree of familiarity with industrial chemical process facilities. This role requires the ability to be on-call and to respond to urgent needs so that the plant maintains capabilities around the clock. The ideal candidate should have the ability to communicate effectively among cross-functional departments with an emphasis on helping maintenance/improving reliability and equipment healthiness of H2 production facility. The candidate must demonstrate a desire to learn new technologies and processes. Additionally, the I&E Technician should also be highly knowledgeable with the operation and troubleshooting of industrial gas systems and components. The candidate must also be fully knowledgeable in medium and low voltage (35KV to 120VAC) electrical systems and working experience in instrumentation and control systems.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • The primary function is to support and maintain the instrumentation and electrical equipment in a safe and efficient manner as described in various procedures, polices, processes and regulatory requirements (e.g. NEC, NFPA 70, 70B, 70E, etc.)
  • Provide technical field expertise in consultation with engineering and reliability resources and Lead the execution of scheduled preventive/corrective maintenance, process improvement.
  • Troubleshooting, functional check, maintenance, and minor repair of low voltage (480VAC and below) and medium voltage (34.5 kV and/or 4160 VAC) electrical systems (switch gears, transformers, rectifiers power panel, VFD, electrical motors etc.).
  • Working knowledge of SEL 751 / 787 / 710, UMC-100, E-300 relays
  • With working knowledge on High voltage electrical system, work closely with and monitor contracted 3rd party on routine maintenance/inspection, troubleshooting/repair, and testing/calibration on electrical systems and components of High Voltage substations/switch yards (115 kV to 34.5 kV).
  • Support/Monitor troubleshooting, calibration, functional check, and maintenance of electronic, analog, and digital process control instrument, and control systems (I/O card, PLC cabinet, network switch, etc.), process analytical equipment.
  • Support and comply within the bounds of a Non-Routine Work Permit.
  • Execute work orders, identify corrective maintenance activities & enter work orders and Planned Maintenance activities into the CMMS platform (Maximo, Emaint, SAP equivalent).
  • Work closely, and communicate directly with contractors, OEM vendors, and suppliers.
  • Work additional operation/maintenance related duties as needed basis.
  • Assist in the training and development of new E&I techs/apprentices.
  • Mentor by providing guidance and sharing experience with the plant team and junior E&I techs.
  • Be prepared to respond as needed to all equipment repair needs and maintenance concerns in an urgent manner, which may include returning to the plant on short notice.
  • Personnel will travel occasionally (0-20%) to vendor/supplier shops or other Plug facilities to assist annual outage, or commissioning activities as needed.
  • Represent Plug Power in a professional manner at all times and in all interactions.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned and required within role.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in working in an industrial electrical, controls, or related field
  • Associate or vocational degree in electrical engineering, or a related field of study preferred or in lieu of an associates or vocational degree and additional 2 years of relevant electrical or controls experience.
  • Must be able to operate independently with minimal supervision while achieving high quality results in work assignments.
  • Ability to interpret, and digest technical documents such as schematic wiring diagrams (SWD), Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), electrical one-line, panel/cabinet wiring diagram, OEM manuals.
  • Demonstrated experience with using test equipment and ability to creatively troubleshoot complex electrical systems, e.g. IR thermography for electrical inspection, Insulation resistance testing, hi-pot testing, voltage verification testing, phase rotation testing, switchgear / MCC control wire / equipment testing, relay testing etc.
  • Preferred experience in industrial DCS or PLC systems and the ability to learn/troubleshoot about these systems.
  • Ability to understand, undertake, create, or improve industrial safety work procedures.
  • NFPA 70E training certificate is preferred or at least be trained and complete the training and certification.
  • High-voltage Safety training under OSHA Requirement 29 CFR 1910.269 such as High Voltage Electrical Safetyfor Power, or similar is preferred or must accept training.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
