Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Completion of 2-year technical school and ten years of progressive work experience in maintenance, repair and installation of locking mechanisms in the commercial environment, including experience in the layout of major keying systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge/training in the standard practices and methods of project coordination and estimating. Considerable knowledge of master keying systems; standard practices and methods of the locksmith trade. Ability to lay out keying systems. Manual skill in making minute filings and insertions. Knowledge standard practices/methods of carpentry and locksmith based on the local, state and national codes; trained and skilled in the use and operation of tools, machines and materials utilized in Locksmithing. Ability to read, interpret schematics and work from blue prints, drawings and sketches. Able to perform heavy tasks. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with Physical Plant administration and other trades personnel.

Training in CAD CAM operations preferred.
Required License or Certification
Certified Registered Locksmith ( CRL) and/or Certified Institutional Locksmith ( CIL) REQUIRED
Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
Independently maintain, improve and expand all residential facilities. Provide an adequate, safe and attractive area in which to learn and improve educational skills, knowledge and professions. This position inspects areas to be secured by locking mechanisms and repairs to building components, assists with maintenance campus-wide master keying systems; consults in design and modification recommendation and ensures proper record maintenance of all keys.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Physical Plant is responsible for providing services relative to building and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, disposition of surplus property and moving and hauling. In addition, the Physical Plant has expanding responsibilities that includes providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University's mission, goals and objectives. Maintains and improves and expands all campus buildings, campus image and education opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, landscape design, event planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair, motor pool and housekeeping services to 35 academic buildings, six residence and two farm buildings. Moreover, the Skilled Trades Department is responsible for repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance of campus facilities.
Work Hours 7am - 4pm (required to respond to emergencies/inclement weather; rotate working on-call/callbacks)

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies


Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties
- Install and maintain electronic locking system.
- Cut and issue keys for all residential facilities.
- Cut keys by using code numbers and code books.
- Rekey and repair locks.
- Key to grand master and master key locks.
- Install and repair exit devices and door closures.
- Repair and adjust doors to operate properly.
- Address security and emergency needs as related to doors and door hardware.
- Perform all locksmith duties requested by supervisor.
- Read blue prints to log keys for new construction and renovation.
- Alternate monthly working on call and carry the pager as assigned. Perform task necessary to make emergency callbacks safe and secure until later completion of task.
- Perform some task with contractor as outlined by supervisor.
- Plane doors to fit.
- Inspect all tools and equipment for safety and operational condition before using daily.
- Provide an inventory of tools and materials stored in the shop.
- Stock trucks with an average supply of tools, materials and equipment to perform average tasks.
- Pick up materials, supplies and equipment from vendors.
- Receive materials, supplies, tools and equipment and stock in the proper storage area.
- Record all supplies taken from stock areas on inventory sheet.
- Completely fill out all work orders upon job completion and turn in to supervisor the same day, drop in completion box; provide records on work orders completed, include dates and hours. Make and file copies of all turned in paper work.
- Drive trucks. Refill truck gas tanks at the one quarter gas gauge indicator mark. Rotate driving assignments as listed on the driving roster. Call in all job locations and motor travel to the Radio Base Station.
- Inspect first aid kit and fire extinguisher located in the truck and replenish as necessary.
- Report all on the job injuries to the supervisor at the time they occur and provide correct and accurate information to supervisor. Get medical attention as necessary.
- File a report with the police for vehicle accidents, lost or stolen tools and equipment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned and requested by the supervisor.
- Perform shop maintenance, vehicle maintenance and clean work area.


Required Competency Attention to Detail
Duties
Accuracy Required in Work - Performs work according to state, national and local building codes and without complaint. Pass a walk through completion inspection conducted by supervisor, skill trade supervisor, management and state inspector.


Required Competency Coordination - Work
Duties
Receives instructions and assignments from supervisor but able to work independently ensuring quality and quantity work is performed. Also able to complete assignments via instructions received via work request, radio messages from the base station, emergency call backs from the supervisor and the University police.

Works independently of the supervisor to meet/complete daily assignments and complete work requests.

Rotates working on-call/callbacks.


Required Competency Safety and Health Compliance
Duties
Follows overall safety program objectives, including third party coordination (i.e., OSHA, DOL, DOI. Anticipates safety issues and take proactive steps to maximize safe operations.


Required Competency Client/Customer Service
Duties
Students, faculty, staff, vendor, contractor and children population. Personal contacts for purpose of gaining needed information to complete an assigned task, maintain a positive image for the University and the state. Gain funds and support for the University and perform requested repairs.
