Essential Job Duties
Join NC State University's Solid Waste & Recycling team and help keep our campus safe, clean, and sustainable. As a CDL Driver (Vehicle Equipment Operator - Advanced), you'll operate and maintain a fleet of front-end loading collection trucks and related equipment to manage landfill, recycling, and compost collection across the university. Your work directly supports NC State's commitment to environmental stewardship and our goal of diverting 70% of campus waste from landfills.
In this critical role, you'll operate large vehicles, perform routine maintenance, complete safety inspections, and ensure timely collection and delivery to disposal and recycling facilities. You'll also adjust to evolving operational needs, communicate effectively with teammates and customers, and represent the university with professionalism and care.

Essential Job Duties

  • Safely operate front-end loading collection vehicles and container carrier trucks to service campus dumpsters.
  • Complete assigned collection routes averaging 50 locations per day, transporting materials to designated disposal and recycling facilities.
  • Conduct daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, maintain route sheets, and report mechanical issues promptly.
  • Adjust to unplanned route changes and perform emergency or non-scheduled collections as needed.
  • Utilize onboard systems such as FleetMind routing technology, scales, and cameras for efficient service tracking.
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance including greasing, fluid checks, and light replacements.
  • Maintain clean vehicle interiors and exteriors and ensure compliance with all safety, DOT, and environmental regulations.
  • Operate additional equipment such as forklifts, backhoes, or snow-removal vehicles during seasonal or emergency operations.

Other Responsibilities

  • Serve in a mandatory operations role and be available during adverse weather conditions or university closures.
  • Assist with snow plowing, brine application, and other emergency response tasks as needed.
  • Work hours follow a ten-hour shift schedule, typically 3:00 a.m.-1:45 p.m. during the academic year and 3:00 a.m.-11:45 a.m. during summer/holiday periods.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of the Facilities Division.

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Requires appropriate licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience operating commercial vehicles and equipment such as collection trucks, dump trucks, semi-trailers, tractors, or snow removal vehicles.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle inspections, maintenance procedures, and DOT safety standards.
  • Proficiency with onboard routing technology (e.g., FleetMind) and ability to document inspections and routes electronically.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, with reliability and flexibility to adjust to changing operational needs.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A or B and must be maintained.
  • Requires appropriate licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment

Special Instructions

  • Collection schedules are Monday - Saturday 3:00 am-11:00 a.m. during the academic year and Monday - Friday 3:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. during the summer and holiday periods. Assigned work days/schedules rotate every six to eight weeks. Drivers typically work between 40 and 48 hours per week depending on staffing.
  • This position earns Overtime Pay (time and a half for hours above 40/week), Holiday Pay as well as Shift Premium Pay (an additional 10% of hourly rate when hours worked between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. exceed half of total daily hours).
  • Position receives University benefits package.
