Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of the Honors College Associate Dean for Academics position at North Carolina A&T State University is to play a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the academic direction of the College. Reporting directly to the Dean and collaborating with the Honors leadership team, the Associate Dean will also work closely with university administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure that academic offerings and advising students on undergraduate scholarly and creative activities, including honors theses consistently meet the highest standards of excellence.

The Associate Dean will also have a key role in curricular oversight, directing the implementation and development of initiatives related to academic programs and student services, reviewing and evaluating Honors-specific course offerings, and collaborating across departments to ensure a robust curriculum for Honors students. The Associate Dean will be expected to teach courses in their discipline as well as the Honors (FRST101) courses. Additionally, the Associate Dean will work with students to formulate individualized academic success plans that utilize Honors requirements as a way to reach individualized goals.

The incumbent will play a vital role in monitoring and assessing progress towards the strategic goals of the College, contributing to the overall excellence of undergraduate education at North Carolina A&T. The Associate Dean will work closely with a faculty advisory board to enhance the Honors curriculum as well as meet with a Council of Associate Deans on campus. The Associate Dean will also represent the College in the absence of the Dean, serving on college committees, and supporting enrollment management initiatives.

Qualifications for the position include a terminal degree in a relevant field, demonstrated leadership experience in academia, a strong commitment to undergraduate education, effective communication and collaboration skills, and preferably, previous experience in overseeing academic advising and undergraduate research programs, with an academic rank of associate or full professor being desirable. In addition, the incumbent should have experience with grant writing or securing external grants.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Honors College at North Carolina A&T State University invites applications for the position of Associate Dean. Reporting directly to the Dean of the Honors College, the Associate Dean will play a pivotal role in the leadership team, contributing to the academic direction and strategic goals of the College.

Responsibilities include collaborating with university administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure the highest standards of excellence in academic offerings, advising, and undergraduate research opportunities.

The successful candidate will oversee the Honors curriculum including Honors-specific course offerings, lead specialized academic advising, and collaborate with the NC A&T Undergraduate Research Office, with a focus on expanding research opportunities for Honors students.

The NC A&T Honors College, founded in 2022, has approximately 950 undergraduate students representing all academic colleges at the university.
Minimum Requirements

  • Terminal degree in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in academia.
  • Strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate education.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Previous experience in overseeing academic advising and undergraduate research programs is desirable.
  • Academic rank of associate or full professor preferred.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience in undergraduate education at the level of an assistant/associate dean, learning community director, or academic advisor.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations pertaining to management of student records and the maintenance of student rights, privacy, and safety.
  • Demonstrative success in collaboration, a strong work ethic and experience in leadership and supervisory roles.
  • The position requires leadership experience, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple work demands.
  • Academic rank of associate or full professor preferred.
