Job Description

The Medical Assistant/Referral Coordinator assists with patient care management, executes administrative and clinical procedures. The Medical Assistant position provides exceptional medical care that meets each patient's physical, mental, and emotional needs. Provide administrative/clinical assistance to physicians/mid-level practitioners/nurses/patients while adhering to a prescribed treatment plan in accordance with established policies and procedures. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Responsible for processing, follow up and communication to patients for referrals and/or procedure orders that are generated by the providers. This position will initiate the authorization for patient services. This position is responsible for knowledge of insurance coverages, documentation of authorizations, and communicates status of authorizations to the practice staff.

Responsibilities

  • Performs administrative medical assistant duties as required including various medical secretarial, financial bookkeeping and insurance tasks.
  • Performs clinical medical assistant duties to include the following: aseptic procedures, takes vital signs, prepares the patients for physician's care, performs venipunctures and non-intravenous injections, observes and reports patients' signs or symptoms, and ensures quality metrics are obtain and documented.
  • Administers Basic First Aid.
  • Assist with patient examinations or treatments.
  • Operates office medical equipment properly.
  • Collects routine laboratory specimens as directed by the physician.
  • Administers medication as directed by the physician.
  • Performs basic laboratory procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge/certification. Pursues professional growth and development.
  • Responsible for timely processing of incoming and/or outgoing referrals and orders.
  • Documents all phone calls, messages and interactions with patients and insurance companies appropriately in the patient's chart or applicable order systems.
  • Obtains prior authorizations for all appointments and procedures.
  • Updates any patient demographics into the practice management system.
  • Receives and routes incoming telephone calls in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Works closely with Baptist Medical Group Representatives, all medical facilities, insurance companies, patients and family members.


Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
  • Technical Diploma/Certificate Medical Assisting, Military trained corpsmen Required

Minimum Work Experience

  • One year out of the last three years medical assistant experience is required in lieu of medical assistant program or military training program. If experience is used in lieu of medical assistant program or military training program, high school diploma or equivalent is required. Required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Medical Assistant (ARMA) Upon Hire Required or
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA_AAMA) Upon Hire Required or
  • Medical Assistant (NCMA_NCCT) Upon Hire Required or
  • Medical Assistant (CMAS_NAHP) Upon Hire Required or
  • Clinical Medical Assistant (CLMA_NHA) Upon Hire Required or
  • Medical Assistant (RMA_AMT) Upon Hire Required and
  • Medical Assistant Membership (AMT) Upon Hire Required
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) American Heart Association within 30 Days Required

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical law, medical ethics, human relations and patient education.
  • Skills and ability in administrative and clinical medical assisting.
  • Able to communicate effectively through written and/or verbal communication.
  • Basic Computer skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform EKGs and obtain accurate blood pressure readings.
