The EXPAND study is investigating the relationship between psychosocial stress, exposomic interactions, and asthma pathophysiology. EXPAND is a case-control study of asthma and other outcomes in Richmond adolescents. The study aims to understand associations between estimated air pollutant exposures, psychosocial stress, and health outcomes in adolescents aged 8-16 years old with physician-diagnosed asthma. The study involves the collection of multiple types of data, including demographic, medical history, measures of psychosocial stress, handling and shipment of biospecimen (nasal and oral swab, blood), and physiological testing (anthropometry, blood pressure measurement, lung function testing). The research specialist will work closely with faculty, staff, and trainees in the ZSFG Pulmonary Division to ensure the successful execution of this research study through literature reviews, interpretation of air quality data collected, and interpretation of interview data. The research specialist will perform independently or with general direction at the fully operational journey level of the series to execute, manage, and coordinate research protocols as they relate to air quality monitoring, as directed by the Principal Investigator (PI). The specialist's duties may include performing literature reviews, observing and supporting installing, maintaining, and or troubleshooting air quality monitoring equipment at various study sites; collect air quality data, including particulate matter (PM); calibrate and troubleshoot monitoring equipment to ensure accurate data collection. The specialist will also be expected to collect and maintain accurate and detailed records of air quality and health data, enter and manage data in electronic databases, and perform statistical analyses and interpret research findings related to air quality and asthma outcomes.
