Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

- Licensed Veterinary Technician with 5+ years hands on clinical experience within an emergency animal hospital

Position Summary
The Veterinary Nursing Manager in Small animal 24/7 Care is an experienced Licensed Veterinary Technician that will provide overall supervision of the team of technicians in the unit. This unit is responsible for providing 24-hour nursing care in the Emergency/Critical care area to small animal patients, primarily dogs and cats, that are recovering from surgery or illness and are in the process of being released to return home to their owners. Within this unit, work as an LVT involves handling patients in life threatening situations where the following duties involved includes: CPR, Collection of blood, urine by expression, cystocentesis or catheterization, Administration and application of anesthesia, drugs, fluids, medications and immunological agents by oral, parenteral and injectable routes and utilization of computer systems to enter and maintain medical record keeping.
The Veterinary Nursing Manager leads the 24/7 Care unit members in providing adequate support by assisting as needed to provide a positive culture based on trust and teamwork. Oversees schedules for the unit and manages and approves time-off requests for all technicians ensuring adequate coverage for the unit. Coordinates the holiday schedule for the 24/7 Care technician team members to ensure adequate coverage during busy holidays. Oversees the training for all new unit members and ensures all leaders are providing accurate training and regular feedback. Performs employee evaluations and reviews for the 24/7 Care unit team member with the assistance of the Veterinary Clinical Nursing Director. Drives accountability of all team members in achieving goals.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Maintain current State of Georgia license as a Licensed Veterinary Technician or ability to be licensed or transfer license from another state to the state of Georgia within 6 months of employment.
  • Proven experience within an emergency critical care animal hospital setting.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with properly handling animals.
  • Capable of dealing with stressful situations.
  • Able to perform all skills of a Licensed Veterinary Technician such as: phlebotomy on animals, manually calculating basic formulas for weight conversions, medication dose conversions, Collection of blood, urine by expression, cystocentesis or catheterization, collection and preparation of tissue, cellular, or microbiological samples by skin scraping, impressions; routine laboratory test procedures; radiology including settings, positioning, processing, and safety; intravenous and arterial catheterization; administration and application of treatments, drugs, fluids, medications and immunological agents by oral, parenteral and injectable routes.
  • Administering emergency critical care by providing Induction and maintenance of anesthesia; placement of intra-nasal, intra-gastric tubes; euthanasia; resuscitative procedures; applications of splints and slings; application of appropriate wound dressings and external supportive care in severe wound and burn cases.
  • Provide leadership to staff working on multiple shifts within a 24/7/365 hospital environment.
  • Able to utilize multiple software platforms to capture patient charges, record medical record data, communicate across various areas of the hospital to ensure proper patient care is documented.

Physical Demands

  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
  • Manual dexterity to work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects, containers, and machinery.
  • Wear all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles etc.
  • Work with wound care equipment, cleaning solutions, and other materials to prevent infections.

Patient Management:

  • Manages all aspects of the patient's treatment and care. Informs attending clinician on any change or decomposition of the patient's condition in an informed and timely manner.
  • Professionally communicate with Veterinarians, students and fellow technicians concerning the affected workflow, time limitations and patient status and will maintain a positive attitude and calm demeanor throughout stressful situations.
  • Provide intermediate animal care to patients: walk, water, feed, transport, restrain, groom.
  • Administer medication, monitor vital signs, take samples of bodily fluids, whether blood or urine.
  • Maintains clinical records using VetView and Instinct proprietary software database to record and submit input of charges.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overall unit functionality including but not limited to, stock supplies of cleaning products and patient care equipment.
  • Ensure facility cleanliness with the use of mop, broom, chemical cleaning supplies to sanitize cages and cleaning the floor.
  • Works with caretaker and Facilities Maintenance Division supervisors to ensure general housekeeping needs are met.
  • Works with warehouse and inventory associates to ensure appropriate stock/materials remain available based on unit need.
