Job Overview

The Perioperative Service Coordinator is responsible for providing direct patient care in a perioperative environment. Additionally, this role is responsible for initiating and supporting work efforts that maximize quality, safety and services in defined perioperative specialties in collaboration with leadership and providers. Assists with procedures and anesthesia and coordinates the ordering and securing of supplies, equipment and instruments on behalf of providers. Provides clinical education to team members.

The Operating Room at Anschutz campus is a 14 OR unit that treats children and adolescents for any level of injury or illness. The unit supports 24 different surgical specialties and performs more than 23,000 cases a year. We are a unique, yet impressive team comprised of bachelor's prepared nurses, certified surgical technicians, anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, and surgeons. The staff in the OR are proud to provide safe quality of care to our patients. We perform a wide variety of surgical procedures including abdominal and thoracic surgery, bariatric surgery, cleft, craniofacial, and plastic reconstructive surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiac surgery, ENT surgery, fetal surgery, burn treatment, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology surgery, gynecologic procedures, transplant surgery, and urology surgery. Our OR nurses and surgical technologists receive extensive training and education in all surgical specialties promoting communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. We promote continued education and encourage staff to pursue specialty certifications. This position is eligible for relocation assistance, if relocating from 100 miles or greater.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) is required.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of perioperative (OR Nurse) clinical experience and three (3) years nursing experience for a total of five (5) years of required experience
  • Certification(s): Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at the time of hire; Achievement and maintenance of a Magnet approved certification is required within six (6) months of hire.
  • Licensure(s): Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of Colorado is required.
  • Professional Membership(s): Active membership in a professional nursing or healthcare organization is required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

A team member in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the team member may be expected to perform.

  • Plans, delivers, and assesses patient and family centered care while incorporating developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence based care practices and methodologies per the standards set forth by the Nurse Practice Act and Professional Practice Model. Assesses changes in patient outcomes and unit needs. Acts as a role model and coach to team members on the provision of care.
  • Communicates and advocates patient values, preferences and expressed needs as part of the implementation of a care plan, evaluation of care and assessment of patient learning needs.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with multidisciplinary healthcare providers to provide individualized patient care and education while minimizing risks to the patient during transitions of care.
  • Researches, compiles and analyzes data and prepares correspondence to facilitate communication, clinical decision making, error prevention and care coordination.
  • Collects, monitors and reports on quality of care outcomes and measures. Participates in continuous evaluation and improvement of internal quality and safety processes, procedures and performance measures, including a focus on supplies, equipment and instruments.
  • Ensures compliance with clinical policies, procedures, safety rules and best practices to minimize the risk of harm to patients and the care team.
  • Participates in or leads projects on the impact of team functioning on safety and quality of care. Solicits input from team members to improve individual and team performance.
  • Designs quality improvement and evidence based practice activities at the unit/department level. Acts as a role model in integrating evidence into practice.
  • Identifies need for and/or participates in the development or revision of organizational or departmental policies, procedures or practice guidelines.
  • Collaborates with providers to identify procedural preferences to effectively secure supplies, equipment and instruments for various perioperative specialties. Provides recommendations on purchasing capital equipment.
  • Orients to the charge nurse role and acts as charge nurse as needed. Charge nurse responsibilities include but not limited to: Working with the ACM/Manager to mediate problems involving providers, patient/family, and hospital personnel. Provide clinical follow up through just-in-time coaching when desired outcomes are not achieved. Take ownership in the financial success of the unit with appropriate resource utilization and management of staffing.
  • Participates in education by precepting and the education of orientees, peers and students and acting as a clinical resource.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $87,929.81 to $131,894.71
Hourly Salary Range: $42.27 to $63.41
