Departmental Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 300 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 900 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). We are currently seeking a Groundskeeper who will work within the department's Facilities unit.

Overview of Position

This position will help care for some of the finest facilities on campus, including Memorial Stadium, Evans Diamond, Witter Rugby Field, and Edwards Stadium. Share in the excitement of the college experience, and work with some of the best coaches and student-athletes in the country as part of Cal's broad Intercollegiate Athletic program.

Working under the direction of Athletics Facilities leadership, the Athletics Groundskeeper plays a key role in providing the sports programs with the opportunity to achieve success. The incumbent combines manual labor and customer service to this position to support the grounds supervisor, the sports teams and entire Athletic Department. The Laborer/Gardener position interacts with, staff, coaches and is important to customer service and execution of the Department mission.

Responsibilities

A. Teamwork:

  • Ensure safe working conditions and implement health and safety policies, and as appropriate, personnel policies in the daily work setting.
  • Communicate with other staff and the general public in a professional manner, and be a positive public relations influence for the unit and the entire department.
  • Support Grounds Supervisor with onsite projects as needed.
  • Learn how Athletics prepares and maintains fields and grounds for Athletics Competition.

B. Facility Support:

  • Handle trash/compost/recycle from public Garden bins, sweep areas as needed, and pick up trash and debris.

C. Hardscape and Facility entry locations:

  • Assess and address accessibility concerns along common walkways and entries to Athletic Facilities.
  • Remove debris, operate blowers, and use pressure washers.

D. Landscaping:

  • Mow lawn, weed landscape beds, rake/blow outdoor landscaped areas, remove brush from Athletic Facilities.

E. Event Support

  • Take down or clean-up of event venues. Assist in setups, moving furniture, etc.
  • Support Grounds Supervisor on competition-day tasks at various Athletic venues.

Required Qualifications

  • Willingness to work outside, with your hands and perform manual labor.
  • Ability to carry 20-25 pounds.
  • Willingness to learn about grounds maintenance and sports turf care.
  • Flexibility to adapt to constantly changing needs as driven by events and programs.
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers and practice solid customer service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience in repairs and maintenance of equipment.
  • Experience in event preparation or athletic program support.
  • Basic understanding of grounds maintenance.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $24.02 (step 1.0) - $25.01 (step 3.0).

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
