The University of Georgia's Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research institution located on a 700-acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute's primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow's scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University's Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia's Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy. Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is also home to the R/V Savannah. The R/V Savannah is operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System ( UNOLS) fleet.

40 hours/week minimum, Monday - Friday, with the possibility of some holidays and weekends based on Research Vessel Charter Schedule.

Merchant Mariner Credential ( MMC) is required for full consideration.

Operation and maintenance experience on commercial, military, or large private vessels preferred.

This is a position responsible for the operation and maintenance of boats, vessels, and marine equipment. Position reports to the Master of the Vessel (Captain) and assists in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the research vessel in order to perform scientific research. The position provides functional support to other crew members in maintenance projects and related tasks. Work is performed under general direction of the captain of the research vessel and is reviewed through observation and inspection.

Lift and carry a minimum of 70 pounds repeatedly, throughout the workday. Driving as needed to perform job related duties.

Perform duties as watch chief.

Assist with deployment and recovery of scientific equipment.

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of deck equipment, including frames, winches, crane, and ship's tender.

Assist First Mate with safety briefing, as necessary, for crew and scientific party during safety drills.
