Job Summary
The Liu Quantum Matter Lab in the Department of Physics at The University of Texas at Dallas invites applications for a postdoctoral research position focused on scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of quantum materials. The successful candidate will lead experimental studies using ultra-low-temperature, high-magnetic-field STM/ STS to investigate strongly correlated, topological, and low-dimensional quantum materials.
We seek a creative, independent, and highly motivated experimentalist with substantial hands-on STM/ STS experience. Research responsibilities will include STM imaging and spectroscopy, sample and tip preparation, operation and troubleshooting of cryogenic and ultrahigh-vacuum instrumentation, data analysis, mentoring students, and preparing publications and presentations.
Minimum Education and Experience
Ph.D in a related field.

Candidates who have successfully completed all requirements for the Ph.D. but whose degree has not yet been formally conferred may be eligible to begin employment provided they submit an official letter from the Registrar or Graduate School of the degree-granting institution certifying that all doctoral requirements have been satisfied and specifying the expected date of conferral. Appointment and continued employment are contingent upon formal conferral of the Ph.D.
Preferred Education and Experience
Candidates should hold, or expect to hold before the appointment begins, a Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field. Experience with low-temperature or ultrahigh-vacuum STM, cryogenic instrumentation, surface preparation, instrument development, or quantum materials is particularly desirable.
Other Qualifications
To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and conduct experimental research in your focus area
  • Develop, refine, and document experimental protocols
  • Analyze data and maintain advanced instrumentation
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers
  • Contribute to manuscripts, proposals, and conference presentations
