DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego's Department of Music builds upon the University's vision to "align our efforts to be a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university" as the country's foremost graduate program in contemporary and experimental music. Graduate degree programs focus in Composition, Computer Music, Integrative Studies, and Performance. The undergraduate program at UC San Diego offers a bachelor of arts in music, music humanities, and ICAM (Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts). The curriculum emphasizes the development of musical listening and performance skills as applied to both contemporary and traditional music. The Department enrolls students in its 42 to 47 undergraduate courses and seminars each quarter. There are over 151 Music Majors and 163 Music minors in addition to 90 students pursuing either MA, Ph.D., or DMA graduate degrees.

The Department produces over 300 events each academic year, across the wide spectrum of performing arts disciplines, from solo instrumentalist recitals to 70+ person orchestral performances, to fully staged annual opera productions, to the 600+ person UC San Diego Gospel Choir performing each term (three times a year) in Mandeville Auditorium.

The Department has 26 ladder rank faculty, 1 lecturer with security of employment (LSOE), 4 Unit 18 lecturers, 8 administrative staff and 7 Production staff supporting Department activity.

The Department is responsible for three facilities containing multiple performance spaces: the Conrad Prebys Music Center, with the 380 seat Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, the 144 seat Recital Hall, and the 170 seat Experimental Theater), Warren Lecture Hall (with Recording Studios A & B), 5 project studios and 800 seat Mandeville Auditorium, the largest performing arts facility on the UC San Diego campus.

Mandeville Auditorium, a 23,417 sq. ft. full service recharge facility, hosts major campus events and performances including annual residencies by departments and organizations including the Helen Edison Lecture Series, ArtPower, University Events Office, Muir Musical, Kaibigang Pilipino, Vietnamese Student Association, Chinese Students and Scholars Association, Explorer Academy, Black Student Union, Welcome Week orientations fo the campus colleges, and guest speakers including political figures, noted authors and Nobel laureates.

In addition to campus engagement, the Department of Music actively hosts community organizations through performances by the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, San Diego Ballet, Indian Fine Arts Academy, La Jolla Music Society, San Diego Symphony and various National dance competitions and showcases including: Culture Shock, Bravo!, Leap, Spotlight, and StarQuest International.

The Theater Production Specialist 3 is responsible for day-to-day activities, policies and procedures, financial and personnel management, training and supervision of production staff and students, associated with the technical aspects of simultaneous productions at the Conrad Prebys Music Center. The incumbent is the primary representative of the Department of Music for the Conrad Prebys Concert Hall and has the responsibility for maintenance of facility and stage equipment, safety compliance and establishing procedures for operations for all users within the facilities.

The incumbent is a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise - specifically in live sound operation and audio networking; problem-solving frequently, requires analysis of unique issues / problems without precedent and / or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.

Plans and manages all production and technical aspects of Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, and other Department of Music facilities, as assigned. Coordinates with faculty, students, clients, guest and touring technical supervisors, programming staff, and production staff. Coordinates collaborative event operations with University representatives including: the Chancellor's Office, Special Events and Protocol, the School of Arts and Humanities, UC San Diego Police, Colleges Business Office, College Provosts' Offices, Center for Student Involvement, University Events Office, Campus Performing Events Office, ArtPower, University Centers Technical Services, Facilities Management, Special Events Parking, UC San Diego Catering, as well as various technical and supporting external vendors.

Responsible for all aspects of managing subordinate staff and stage crew members, and evaluates their performance, guides workload, addresses all supervisory issues at the Conrad Prebys Concert Hall. Responsible for the implementation and operation of safety protocols.

The incumbent facilitates production requirements, theater management, construction, installation and maintenance of elements in a variety of theatrical craft and arts areas including direction, technical support, stage crews, lighting, sound, scenery, rigging, props, projection, multimedia, wardrobe, hair and make-up, and artist hospitality.

The incumbent operates with a high level of autonomy and leadership, serving as primary technical and production manager for all events based in the Conrad Prebys Concert Hall from initial bookings to event operations through settlement and event billing. Position reports to the Department of Music Production Manager, based at the Conrad Prebys Music Center, and serves as the primary back-up in their absence.

  • This position has recently been accreted by TX union and will be a part of that union moving forward.

Work Schedule: This position is 100% on the UCSD La Jolla campus and in-person. Must be willing and available to work a varying schedule. Programming in the facility often necessitates a different work schedule each week, including evenings and weekends. Must have access to reliable transportation to transport performance props.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area such as Performance Arts with typically 5-7 years of experience and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Proven experience in live performance event production and skill to operate professional audio, video, projection, lighting, rigging and power distribution systems to produce theatrical performances and concerts. Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot professional theatrical audio/visual equipment.

  • Mastery level knowledge in multiple technical theater production areas such as lighting, sound, video, costumes, hair / make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, etc. Thorough working knowledge of University and collective bargaining policies, practices, rules, regulations, etc., including safety rules and regulations.

  • Thorough knowledge / skills in all aspects of budget administration. Skilled in creating technical production event budgets and schedules, operating spreadsheet software (ex: MS Excel or Google Sheets), and producing inventories and performance reports.

  • Thorough organizational skills. Demonstrated proficiency in analyzing show specifications, venue capabilities, and technical procedures to define production objectives and formulate streamlined, objective solutions within performance deadlines.

  • Proven ability to support talent acquisition, deliver technical training, and provide direct, safety-focused supervision to student stage crew and part-time production personnel across multiple theatrical disciplines.

  • Exceptional client-service orientation, with demonstrated ability to translate complex theatrical systems and technical concepts into accessible, actionable communication for university community members, external clients, and general public patrons.

  • Proficiency in industry-standard technical design software (including Vectorworks and AutoCAD) alongside core business productivity tools (MS Office Suite, Google Workspace, and FileMaker Pro). Demonstrated expertise leveraging digital platforms, web-based systems, and email applications for data management, research, and professional communication, with a proven capacity to master emerging technological platforms and campus systems.

  • Proven expertise in workload estimation, production scheduling, and resource allocation, with a demonstrated ability to accurately evaluate crew skill sets, forecast labor requirements, and establish realistic project completion timelines for complex musical events.

  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of musical instrumentation, sound reinforcement systems, audio engineering, and live concert production, paired with proven hands-on expertise in AV system maintenance, signal routing, analog/digital synthesis, and multi-track recording methodologies.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of institutional policies, collective bargaining agreements, OSHA compliance standards, and industry best practices governing public assembly, crowd control, venue security, and emergency response management within live event environments.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,700 - $118,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.42 - $56.75

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
