Job Description
The Assistant Director of the Standardized Patient Program provides administrative and operational leadership for the UMKC School of Medicine Standardized Patient (SP) Program and SP-based simulation activities supported by the Clinical Training Facility (CTF) and sites it operates. This position oversees SP personnel, program operations, educational activities, quality improvement, and resource management while collaborating with faculty, staff, and external partners to support high-quality simulation-based education. The position directly supervises Standardized Patients and the SP Coordinator and provides functional oversight to other CTF personnel supporting SP activities. Regular travel between Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri, is required and reimbursed in accordance with university policy. This position is not remote. Key Responsibilities
- Program Leadership & Administration
- Lead day-to-day administration and continuous development of the Standardized Patient Program, including the sensitive exam program.
- Recruit, hire, onboard, train, schedule, supervise, evaluate, and remediate SP personnel in accordance with university policies.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and simulation leadership to develop and implement strategic priorities and support SP-based educational activities.
- Maintain program policies, procedures, records, training resources, and educational materials.
- Serve as a liaison and subject-matter resource for faculty, departments, affiliates, and external partners regarding SP services.
- Support simulation accreditation activities and represent the program at appropriate institutional, regional, and national activities.
- Institutional Representation: Represent the simulation program locally, regionally, and nationally as assigned.
- Education, Assessment & Quality Improvement
- Develop and deliver SP training in role portrayal, learner assessment, and verbal and written feedback.
- Advise faculty on the design, implementation, and effective use of SP-based simulation activities.
- Develop and maintain SP training curricula, assessment materials, and continuing education resources.
- Lead quality improvement activities to evaluate SP performance, feedback, consistency, and program effectiveness.
- Evaluation & Outcomes Reporting: ensure post-event evaluations are completed for all SP-involved activities; log, filter, and prepare evaluation data for reporting; and submit it to the appropriate director, who guides review and dissemination. The SP Director and Operations Manager are jointly accountable for hybrid events.
- Support the development and improvement of SP-based curricula, special projects, research, and faculty development initiatives.
- Instruct American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) courses for School of Medicine learners.
- Operations & Resource Management
- Scheduling: Coordinate scheduling of SPs for all SP-involved events. For events in our simulation center buildings, communicate space, equipment, and timing needs to the Operations Manager, who manages room allocation and scheduling. The two work hand in hand to resolve conflicts and handle exceptions and are jointly accountable for scheduling hybrid and SP events. For events held outside our simulation buildings, such as SOM rooms not managed by the center or affiliate sites, coordinate SP scheduling and arrangements directly with site contacts.
- Event Management: Manage the SP components of all simulation events, examinations, and practice activities, including staffing, logistics, and execution. This includes managing SP-related functions in the CAE platform, such as SP notes, SP evaluations, faculty grading, and video recording of SP events. For hybrid events, this role owns the SP portion, in partnership with the Operations Manager, who leads all other components.
- Assist with resource planning, grants, revenue-generating activities, and external SP projects.
- Develop and implement procedures that promote efficient, consistent, and high-quality SP operations.
- Manage SP payroll and program expenditures in coordination with School of Medicine Business Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in healthcare administration, health education, public health, management, simulation, education, fine arts, or a related field.
- At least one (1) year of experience working in higher education, healthcare, clinical education, or simulation.
- Experience as an actor, director, producer, stage manager, and/or casting director in theatrical/commercial/film productions.
- Experience working with or serving as a standardized patient with demonstrated competency in role portrayal, delivery of written/verbal feedback, and performance assessment.
- Supervisory, program management/evaluation, or business operations experience.
- AHA BLS certification

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related administrative technology.

Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring salary for this position has been established as up to $57,000 annually. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
