Job Summary

The Patient Safety Professional performs complex analytic, technical, research, and professional duties supporting patient safety, medical staff quality, regulatory compliance, and organizational risk management. The position independently manages projects, analyzes sensitive information, coordinates multidisciplinary initiatives, and exercises professional judgment in matters involving patient safety, quality of care, medical staff activities, regulatory requirements, and accreditation.

Working under the general direction of the Chief Medical Officer and Director, Regulatory, Licensure & Accreditation, the Patient Safety Professional serves as a key resource to executive leadership, Medical Staff leadership, committees, and other stakeholders. The position analyzes and synthesizes complex information; develops, validates, and maintains highly confidential documentation; coordinates actions requiring executive or committee review; and supports initiatives that directly impact the quality, safety, and regulatory standing of the Medical Center.

The position requires a high degree of discretion and independence due to the sensitive nature of information involving patients, medical staff, peer review, quality of care, patient complaints, adverse events, regulatory matters, and Medical Center licensure and accreditation.

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent combination of experience/training
  • At least 3 years of experience in a Medical Staff Office or other related setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of planning, analysis, evaluation, and performance improvement principles, with the ability to apply this knowledge to complex clinical, operational, quality, patient safety, and Medical Staff matters.
  • Broad knowledge of UCDMC operations, organizational structure, goals, Medical Staff governance, and quality and patient safety priorities, with the ability to understand interrelationships across clinical and administrative functions.
  • Advanced ability to analyze complex information, identify trends and risks, evaluate alternatives, and develop sound recommendations to support decision-making by Medical Staff and organizational leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment, prioritize multiple complex assignments, manage competing deadlines, and make appropriate decisions within established policies and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with physicians, Medical Staff leaders, executives, clinical staff, committees, and administrative personnel.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear, concise, accurate, and highly sensitive documents, reports, presentations, and committee materials.
  • Ability to listen to, participate in, and contribute effectively to complex clinical and operational discussions, accurately identify key issues and decisions, and translate discussions into appropriate actions, follow-up, and documentation.
  • Ability to interpret, evaluate, revise, and implement requirements contained in organizational policies, procedures, bylaws, rules, regulations, and forms to achieve desired clinical, operational, quality, and regulatory outcomes.
  • Strong consultation, facilitation, conflict-management, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals and groups across varying levels of authority and areas of expertise.
  • Working knowledge of The Joint Commission, National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), California Code of Regulations Title 22, and other applicable regulatory, licensing, and accreditation requirements related to quality, patient safety, Medical Staff activities, performance improvement, and resource utilization.
  • Ability to research, interpret, and apply regulatory and accreditation requirements to complex situations and determine appropriate actions, documentation, escalation, and follow-up.
  • Proven ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information involving patients, physicians, Medical Staff activities, peer review, quality of care, patient safety, and regulatory matters with appropriate discretion and confidentiality.
  • Ability to independently coordinate multiple complex projects and initiatives involving executive leadership, Medical Staff leadership, physicians, committees, clinical departments, and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with data analysis, reporting, dashboards, and other tools used to monitor and communicate quality, safety, performance, and operational outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Professional in Medical Services Management (CPMSM) or Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS)

Department Overview

Medical and Regulatory Affairs supports the Organized Medical Staff in fulfilling its responsibilities for the quality and safety of health care provided at UC Davis Medical Center. The department provides operational, analytical, regulatory, and administrative support for Medical Staff governance, quality and patient safety activities, regulatory compliance, peer review, and related organizational priorities.

The Organized Medical Staff is accountable for the quality of care provided at UC Davis Medical Center and operates within the governance and authority of the University of California, Davis, including the Chancellor, President, and Regents. The department works closely with Medical Staff leadership, executive leadership, clinical departments, committees, and regulatory and accrediting organizations to ensure that Medical Center and Medical Staff activities meet applicable standards, bylaws, policies, and regulatory requirements.

The department's work is subject to significant external scrutiny. It includes responsibilities associated with maintaining compliance with applicable California regulations, accreditation standards, Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations, and requirements established by organizations such as The Joint Commission and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
