The Athletic Trainer (AT) will work primary out of the Orthopaedic Institute on the Mission Bay Campus of UCSF. The position entails a clinical component of physician support, an outreach component of on-site athletic training services, and an administrative component of assisting with projects and events. Clinically, the employee will spend time in a specialty clinic assisting with the day-to-day operations. The AT will be asked to room patients, assist in the patient intake process, and pull up any necessary records relevant to the patient visit. The AT will also provide physician support by assisting with patient education and post-operative procedures as requested. Other responsibilities include assisting with the daily administration of clinic duties, and other tasks as assigned. Outreach for the AT consists of providing on-site care for high school athletes. They will work independently as assigned, or in collaboration with Staff Athletic Trainers, attending physicians, and other staff in delivering sports medicine services for patients and athletes. They will be expected to establish or continue to facilitate a working relationship with the assigned school in delivering athletic training services to the athletes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to providing on-site sports medicine care, sport event coverage, athlete health and safety education, and additional administrative duties. Administratively, the AT will be asked to assist with program and department projects and events. Our ATs provide administrative and planning support for various high schools screening exams as well as support for educational conferences and community event coverage. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF provides expert treatment for all aspects of musculoskeletal injuries including inpatient and outpatient surgical care, rehabilitation, and orthotics and prosthetics. Our physicians have specific training and experience in a broad range of orthopaedic specialties such as sports medicine, trauma, replacement, pediatrics, oncology, spine, shoulder and elbow, foot and ankle, and hand. The Department is internationally recognized for its work in patient care, education, and research. Our basic and translational research programs focus on cartilage and disc regeneration, fracture healing, molecular and stem cell biology, bioengineering, and musculoskeletal development. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Identify the functions or tasks that employees in the job perform. Required Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in a related field. * Thorough knowledge of athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques. * Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team. * Strong written and oral communication skills. * Excellent time management and organizational skills. * Thorough knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to job responsibilities. * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with a diverse patient population. * Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office programs. * Project management experience. * Ability to provide first responder care at athletic events. * Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments. * Recent experience in sports medicine, event coverage, and/or first responder care of high school athletes or beyond. * Minimum of 2 years of education and/or experience in the athletic training field. Preferred Qualifications * Advanced degree in a related field. * Strong manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine. * For positions associated with Sports Medicine, current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), and other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres. * Previous experience working in a clinical setting with physicians and office assistants. Required Licenses/Certifications * Current and active Athletic Trainer Certification (ATC) in good standing with the Board of Certification, Inc. * Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification.
