Plumber - Marine Maintenance

As a Marine Plumber, you'll help keep critical infrastructure operating at Oregon's only container terminal and across the Port's diverse international marine facilities. This is not a typical plumbing job, you'll work on everything from fire protection and potable water systems to stormwater, boilers, air systems, and utility piping in an active maritime environment. You'll be part of a highly skilled maintenance team whose work directly supports international commerce, visiting vessels, and the movement of cargo throughout the Pacific Northwest. Essential duties are listed below, however additional duties within the function may be assigned:

• Maintain and repair fire protection piping systems, including sprinkler lines under docks and within warehouses.
• Provide fresh water service to vessels as requested.
• Maintain, repair, and install sanitary sewer systems, fixtures, and restroom facilities.
• Maintain and repair stormwater conveyance systems, including catch basins, piping, and drainage structures.
• Maintain, repair, and certify boilers, heating systems, and related equipment.
  
• Maintain natural gas distribution systems and heating units.
• Maintain and repair roof drain systems throughout warehouse facilities.
• Install and replace fire extinguishers in compliance with applicable standards.
• Maintain and repair fuel, oil, air, and grease distribution systems.
• Determine appropriate sizing, layout, and materials for piping installations and repairs.
• Perform plumbing work in new construction and modifications of restrooms, showers, drinking fountains, and similar facilities.
• Install, maintain, and repair potable water mains, service lines, and appurtenances.
• Maintain, repair, install, and inspect backflow prevention devices.
• Use safety data sheets and follow all required safety procedures for chemicals, tools, and materials.
  

Education and Experience:

• Minimum two (2) years' experience performing journey-level plumbing work in an industrial, commercial, or marine environment.
• Journeyman level plumbing certification is required.
• Current Blackflow Assembly Tester Certification is required.
• Maintain a valid state driver's license is required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) from the Federal government is required. All licensing fees will be reimbursed by the Port of Portland.

• Knowledge of plumbing codes, standards, regulations, and blueprint reading.
• Experience with fire protection, boilers, backflow prevention, potable water, and piping systems.
• Ability to diagnose, repair, install, and maintain water, wastewater, stormwater, and fuel distribution systems.
• Knowledge of safe work practices, including confined spaces, hazardous materials, and marine environments.
• Skilled in using plumbing tools, materials, equipment, and trade-specific machinery (e.g., manlifts and forklifts).
• Ability to communicate effectively, coordinate work, and collaborate with tenants, Port staff, and other trades.
• Ability to work independently while supporting a multi-craft team.

SELECTION PROCESS (tentative schedule):

1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place by Human Resources the week of August 17, 2026.
   
   
2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.
   
   
3. Our goal is to schedule panel interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation step as soon as possible.
