Position Summary: The CNC Service Technician III performs maintenance on all CNC equipment, coordinates, and supports plant preventative maintenance systems, and implements continuous improvement activities to support the manufacturing process. In this position you will work both in a team environment and independently. You will collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Operators, and other internal team members.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Perform hands-on work focusing on troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical systems.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic systems. Perform diagnostic tests, and ensure the operational efficiency of both mechanical and electronic components.
  • Perform machine software updates, parameter and software backups, and possess the ability to compare these files for diagnosis.
  • Diagnose, replace, repair, predict, and prevent potential equipment failure to minimize down time.
  • Use specialized tools to diagnose and remedy faults in complex equipment. Perform ballbar and laser interferometry to diagnose and correct machining issues related to positioning and part geometry.
  • Set reference parameters and corrections unaided on Fanuc Siemens controls. Use of Step 7 software and PLC programming using a BOP or PC to setup drive parameters.
  • Apply theoretical understanding of mechanical systems and equipment dynamics, together with deep hands-on machine control experience; locate and replace obsolete parts with compatible comparable components ensuring machine functionality.
  • Replace and align all major machinery components including rails, guides Gibs, ways, drive systems, ballscrew, leadscrew and linear motors. Fully bring machinery back to factory specifications.
  • Design and implement electrical circuits and mechanical systems to integrate automation to machinery. Utilize machine logic and additional I/O systems.
  • Install, repair, and replace hydraulic fluid, coolant, or air systems which are associated with the machine.
  • Produce critical spare parts list for equipment to reduce downtime.
  • Conduct thorough inspections and maintenance to prevent potential breakdowns and ensure equipment longevity.
  • Install, repair or replace hydraulic, coolant, air systems, gauges, valves or pressure regulators which are associated with the machine related equipment. Work independently and with others to solve highly complex mechanical and technical problems.
  • Install, repair or replace relays, solenoids, motors and drives which are associated with the machine related equipment. Work independently and with others to solve highly complex mechanical, electrical and technical problems.
  • Develop training material on proper troubleshooting procedures. Train less senior technician on machine repairs; train and mentor less senior technicians on proper troubleshooting methods.
  • Effectively utilize vendors and outside contractors.
  • Participate on problem solving teams for driving to root cause of internal and external quality failures, particularly related to prevention of customer escapes.
  • Follow security protocol and wear proper PPE.
  • Participate in and sustain 5S Standards.
  • Must follow all required Safety and ISO procedures.
  • Regular on-site attendance and punctuality is a necessary function of this position.
  • May be required to work in other functional areas and/or facilities depending on business needs.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate shifts based on business needs.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Education/Experience & Skills:



  • High School diploma or equivalent; Vocational or Applied degree preferred or 10 years of CNC milling or lathe experience on Fanuc or Siemens control. 10-15 years of maintenance repair experience on CNC milling equipment is required.
  • Possess 5 years of experience with Fanuc, ABB or CNC robot pallet tool changer systems such as Erowa, Fastems, System 3R, Makino, Okuma.
  • Knowledge and experience with 220/480 volts is required.
  • Knowledge and experience with predictive maintenance, ball bar calibration, vibration analysis, and spindle replacement and repairs.
  • Knowledge of CNC controls and drives and electrical power distribution.
  • Expertise with Fanuc and Siemens controls. Advanced theoretical understanding of mechanical systems and equipment dynamics, together with deep hands-on experience.
  • Possess advanced troubleshooting knowledge and experience to include electrical and electronics, electro-mechanical assemblies, hydraulic and pneumatic repairs. Must have the right mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience to be able to use specialized tools to diagnose and remedy faults in complex equipment.


  • Must have a strong ability to read mechanical drawings and part prints as well as read and follow ladder and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously in order to meet the needs of a rapidly changing environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, and in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • An understanding and commitment to preventative maintenance.
  • Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
  • Must be dependable, adaptable, and flexible as work frequently shifts in direction. Ability to maintain composure in demanding situations


Working Conditions:



  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks.
  • This position may require standing for long periods of time, working frequently on ladders, scaffolds and lifts, working in dusty, dirty, hot or wet conditions and possibly confined spaces.
  • Shifts are 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours.
  • The duties of this job normally require exposure to a typical manufacturing environment. Frequent standing, sitting, stooping/squatting, walking, and stair climbing can be expected along with frequent lifting and/or moving of tooling, parts containers, and materials up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel frequently at a minimum of 50% of the shift, as well as undergo repetitive wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder, and ankle motions.
  • Must demonstrate proficient fine motor skills, ability to grip, reach, pull, turn, and use tools to torque fixtures in various machinery or in the assembly, machining, or testing of parts.
  • Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to focus on fine print.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. security mandates.
