Responsibilities:

JOB SUMMARY
Functions as a Surgeon for the Bariatric Service performing hospital -based surgical and inpatient care management for bariatric patients. The Bariatric Surgeon provides comprehensive evidence based care to a designated patient population and is accountable for patient care evaluation in the 5D unit, and other hospital units as indicated, through discharge of patients on the Bariatric service. The Bariatric Service Surgeon is accountable for the delivery of quality measures that will provide excellence in personalized healthcare. The Bariatric Surgeon will provide communication to all involved physicians and allied health professionals to maintain continuity of care for all patients. Responsibilities will also include General Surgery call as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Clinical Care: Provides hospital based bariatric services incorporating established practice standards to decrease morbidity and mortality and improve quality of care, length of stay, resource efficiency, and fiscal responsibility. Provides coverage as defined, of patients requiring bariatric care as assigned. Provides bariatric service coverage as assigned to meet service line and organizational goals. Provide bariatric and general surgery coverage as assigned to meet service line and organizational goals.
  • Leadership and Compliance: Participates in establishing a positive rapport with the physician staff, community physicians, various departments to include but not be limited to nursing , case management, social work, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, respiratory therapy, rehabilitative services and other appropriate service areas. Facilitates and supports the mentoring of other physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers as it related to area of expertise. Creates a climate for professional practice with other disciplines. Supports the vision and values of the organization. Attends and participates in all Bariatric committees and other committees as appropriate. Supports admission and transfer protocols, policies and procedures and guidelines related to those involving bariatric and/or general surgery patients. Collaborates with the Medical Director and Service Line Administrator to provide fiscal accountability for the service. Collaborates with Case Management and Clinical Documentation Specialists to ensure appropriate documentation is complete for efficient and fiscally responsible operations of the service line.
  • Research and Education: Facilitates and participates in PI, educational and outreach programs related to Bariatric surgery. Participates in research activities within the Bariatric program for the purpose of improving the quality of care in the program. Collaborates with Vice President for Research, Medical Director and Service Line Administrator to identify research opportunities associated with bariatric surgery and obesity medicine. Participates with the Director of Medical Education and Medical Director for Academic Affairs to assure appropriate teaching opportunities to Fellows, Residents and medical students as well as other related educational programs exist. Participates in the education of nurses and other ancillary professionals.

EDUCATION
  • Other / Certificate Board Certified in General Surgery Required
EXPERIENCE
  • 2 years recent experience in the practice of Bariatric Surgery and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Required
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification Required
  • Board Certified Physician - Certification in General Surgery Upon Hire Required
  • Center of Excellence Designation as an individual Surgeon or meets requirement 1 Year Required
  • Regular Member of American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) Required
  • Unsupervised privileges in General Surgery, Advanced Laparoscopic procedures and bariatric surgery procedures granted by the Board of Directors at Scottsdale Healthcare Required
