TITLE: Extrusion Technician A

POSITION OBJECTIVE: Safely set up, operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and adjust blown film extrusion equipment to produce quality products that meet customer specifications while maintaining productivity, minimizing waste, and following all company safety and quality standards. The Extrusion Technician A is responsible for operating extrusion equipment, monitoring production processes, performing quality inspections, completing changeovers, and supporting continuous improvement within the manufacturing operation.

Work Schedule: Rotating 12-hour shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and schedule changes as business needs require.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum of one (1) year of manufacturing or industrial production experience preferred.
• Previous extrusion, plastics manufacturing, blown film, or machine operating experience preferred.
• Ability to learn and safely operate blown film extrusion equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow production schedules, work orders, specifications, and standard operating procedures.
• Ability to monitor machine settings, temperatures, pressures, resin blends, and product quality throughout production.
• Basic mechanical aptitude with the ability to identify and troubleshoot equipment and product issues.
• Ability to safely perform machine startups, shutdowns, product changeovers, and screen changes following established procedures.
• Ability to use measuring devices and perform quality checks to verify product specifications.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality products.
• Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with supervisors, quality personnel, maintenance, and team members.
• Commitment to following all safety policies, PPE requirements, Lockout/Tagout procedures, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, ELECTRONIC DEVICES & SOFTWARE

• Blown film extrusion lines
• Single-screw extruders
• Die heads and air ring systems
• Internal Bubble Cooling (IBC) systems
• Resin blending systems
• Material transfer systems
• Temperature controllers and pressure monitoring systems
• Screen changers
• Digital production controls/HMI interfaces
• Measuring equipment (film thickness gauges, calipers, width measuring devices)
• Hand tools

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Safely operates blown film extrusion equipment in accordance with company procedures and safety requirements.
• Perform equipment startup, shutdown, and product changeovers while maintaining safe operating conditions.
• Monitor machine temperatures, pressures, resin flow, screw speed, bubble stability, air flow, winding tension, and other critical process variables.
• Produce films that meet customer specifications for width, thickness, appearance, strength, and overall quality.
• Perform routine quality inspections and document production results according to company procedures.
• Adjust machine settings as necessary to maintain product quality and production efficiency.
• Perform resin changes and verify proper material blends are used during production.
• Monitor extruder pressures and coordinate screen changes when required.
• Assist with screen changes while following all safety procedures for high-temperature equipment.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and correct common extrusion defects including wrinkles, gels, die lines, blocking, poor roll formation, surging, scratches, and thickness variation.
• Monitor equipment for abnormal operating conditions and promptly report mechanical or safety concerns.
• Maintain housekeeping standards by keeping work areas, equipment, and production lines clean and organized.
• Complete production paperwork accurately and timely.
• Minimize scrap through proper machine setup, monitoring, troubleshooting, and quality control.

WORK ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS SUBJECTED TO IN THIS POSITION

• Manufacturing environment with moving mechanical equipment.
• Exposure to elevated temperatures from extrusion equipment and molten plastic.
• Exposure to noise requires hearing protection.
• Exposure to dust, plastic resins, and manufacturing materials.
• Frequent interaction with heated machine surfaces requiring heat-resistant PPE.

AUTHORITY / DECISION MAKING

• Adjust machine operating parameters within established operating guidelines.
• Stop production when product quality or safety is compromised.
• Escalate equipment malfunctions, abnormal operating conditions, or quality concerns to the Supervisor or Maintenance.
• Recommend process improvements to improve safety, quality, productivity, and waste reduction.
• Participate in troubleshooting equipment and process issues while following company procedures.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION

• Ability to stand and walk continuously throughout a 12-hour shift.
• Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, twisting, climbing stairs, and squatting.
• Frequent use of hands for operating controls, measuring products, and handling tools.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds independently and heavier loads with assistance or lifting devices.
• Ability to work around hot equipment while wearing required PPE.
• Ability to distinguish colors, read digital displays, gauges, production paperwork, and measuring devices.
• Ability to safely climb platforms and work at elevated heights when performing machine setup, adjustments, or inspections.
• Ability to wear required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, heat-resistant gloves, face shields, and safety footwear throughout the shift.
