Position Summary:
The Assistant Professor of Automotive Technology is a full-time faculty position responsible for providing high-quality instruction in introductory and advanced Automotive Technology courses at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell. The position supports student success, credential attainment, and workforce readiness through effective classroom and hands-on laboratory instruction aligned with current industry standards, emerging technologies, and safe work practices.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, the faculty member contributes to the continued growth and success of the Automotive Technology program through curriculum development and improvement, assessment of student learning outcomes, student advising, and participation in departmental and institutional initiatives. The position supports the University's mission through recruitment efforts, community outreach, industry engagement, and professional development activities that strengthen partnerships and create student pathways to career success.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to community college teaching, student engagement, and continuous improvement, as well as the ability to adapt to evolving academic, industry, and institutional needs. Responsibilities may include evening instruction, limited travel, and participation in additional academic initiatives aligned with individual expertise and program goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach a range of Automotive courses, including:
    • Engine Performance
    • Electrical Systems
    • Engine Repair
    • Automotive Brakes
    • Heating and Air Conditioning
    • Automatic/Manual Transmissions
    • Wheel Alignment
    • Light-Duty Diesel
    • Hybrid & Electric Vehicles
  • Prepare students for ASE qualification exams and applicable industry certifications.
  • Develop and maintain course materials, syllabi, and instructional content, including online course components delivered through Canvas.
  • Monitor, assess, and report student attendance, academic performance, and learning outcomes.
  • Maintain Automotive Technology laboratory equipment, tools, materials, and supplies in accordance with safety requirements and instructional standards.
  • Advise students regarding academic planning, program requirements, and progress toward certificates and degrees.
  • Participate in departmental planning, curriculum coordination, program assessment, and semester course scheduling.
  • Serve on college committees and participate in required meetings, trainings, and campus events.
  • Support student recruitment and community outreach initiatives through participation in events and activities as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Associate's degree and three years of full-time work experience in the Automotive field
OR
  • ASE Certifications (A1-A8), and three years of experience in the Automotive field
OR
  • ASE certification(s) required to teach assigned courses, along with a combination of formal education, work experience, and specialized training equivalent to either an Associate's degree or 4,000 hours of relevant work experience.
Additional Requirement:
Qualified applicants who do not currently hold an Associate's degree or ASE Certifications (A1-8, L1-3) must complete the required degree and obtain certification within three years of their hire date.

Preferred:
  • Associate's Degree or higher in a related field, such as:
    • Diesel Technology
    • Automotive Technology
    • Professional Technical Education
  • ASE Certifications L1-3 in addition to A1-8 certifications.
  • Teaching experience at a community college or trade school.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students from diverse educational backgrounds, including those who may be navigating higher education systems for the first time or who face financial, academic, or logistical barriers to completion.


Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to varying temperatures, including hot and cold conditions. The position requires the ability to lift up to 80 pounds and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • The work environment may involve minor safety hazards where the potential outcome could include cuts, bruises, or similar minor injuries. Work is performed in a non-smoking facility.
  • The position requires the ability to meet routine deadlines with generally sufficient lead time. Work volume may vary seasonally and is typically predictable. The position may involve competing priorities, occasional interruptions, and exposure to demands and pressures from individuals other than the immediate supervisor.
  • Physical requirements include frequent standing, sitting, talking, and hearing. The position may occasionally require walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, handling objects with hands, and lifting or moving materials.
  • Ability to view and interpret information in printed and electronic formats.
