The Director of Market Operations will lead the strategic and day-to-day execution of market participation for a diversified renewable energy portfolio, including solar, wind, battery storage, and flexible load assets. This role is responsible for optimizing asset performance across multiple U.S. wholesale power markets while ensuring compliance with regulatory, reliability, and contractual obligations. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise across ISO/RTO markets (CAISO, PJM, ERCOT, SPP, MISO), strong commercial acumen, and a proven track record managing complex energy portfolios.

Key Responsibilities

Market Strategy & Optimization

  • Develop and execute market participation strategies across CAISO, PJM, ERCOT, SPP, and MISO to maximize portfolio value.

  • Oversee bidding, scheduling, dispatch optimization, and real-time operations for renewable and storage assets.

  • Lead congestion management, curtailment strategies, and ancillary services participation.

  • Identify and implement opportunities for revenue enhancement, including arbitrage, capacity markets, and emerging products.

  • Coordinate closely with asset management, trading, and forecasting teams to ensure optimal performance.

  • Support origination and structuring teams in evaluating new commercial opportunities.

  • Ensure alignment between contractual obligations and real-time operations.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable NERC reliability standards and ISO/RTO market rules.

  • Monitor regulatory developments and lead internal response strategies.

  • Collaborate with finance teams on tax equity structures and ensure operational compliance with investor requirements.

  • Support due diligence processes for financing and M&A transactions.

  • Provide operational insights into project valuation and risk assessment.

  • Foster cross-functional collaboration with trading, development, regulatory, and finance teams.

  • Drive continuous improvement in systems, processes, and analytics capabilities.

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in power markets, energy trading, or market operations within the renewable energy sector.

  • Deep expertise across at least three major ISOs/RTOs: CAISO, PJM, ERCOT, SPP, MISO (experience in all preferred).

  • Proven experience managing renewable portfolios including solar, wind, and battery storage assets.

  • Strong knowledge of renewable project off-take agreements (PPA, VPPA, tolling structures).

  • Demonstrated experience with NERC compliance and reliability standards.

  • Experience working with tax equity financing structures and investor requirements.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with deep understanding of power market dynamics.

  • Commercial mindset with ability to balance risk and value optimization.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, evolving regulatory and market environment.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, or related field required.

  • Advanced degree (MBA, MS) preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with automated trading platforms, energy management systems (EMS), and forecasting tools.

  • Familiarity with emerging market constructs such as capacity accreditation, hybrid resource participation models, and demand response.

  • Background in both physical and financial energy markets.
