JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

The Public Safety Specialist supports the Director of Public Safety in the daily operations of the Public Safety Department. This position serves as a departmental resource by coordinating daily security operations, assisting with emergency preparedness, maintaining security systems, supporting training initiatives, and promoting a safe and welcoming campus environment.

The Public Safety Specialist exercises independent judgment in carrying out assigned responsibilities while working collaboratively with contract security personnel, campus departments, students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of the Public Safety Department.
  • Serve as the primary departmental resource in the Director's absence for routine operational matters.
  • Monitor campus security systems, including CCTV, access control, and alarm systems.
  • Review Daily Activity Reports (DARs) for accuracy and completeness.
  • Conduct routine inspections of campus facilities and security equipment.
  • Coordinate follow-up on maintenance, safety, and security concerns.
  • Assist with investigations involving incidents occurring on campus.
  • Prepare reports, spreadsheets, and documentation related to departmental operations.
  • Assist with emergency response, drills, and exercises.
  • Coordinate security coverage for campus events.
  • Support the onboarding and training of contract security personnel.
  • Assist with parking enforcement, access control, and visitor management.
  • Maintain departmental inventories, emergency equipment, and documentation.
  • Recommend improvements to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in public safety, campus security, law enforcement, military, emergency management, or related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education public safety.
  • Experience with access control systems.
  • Experience with video management systems (Avigilon preferred).
  • Experience with incident reporting software.
  • CPR/AED certification.
  • Emergency management or incident command training.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Associate's degree preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Valid driver's license.
Physical Requirements
  • Walk extensive areas of campus.
  • Climb stairs.
  • Lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Respond to emergencies in all weather conditions.
  • Occasionally work evenings, weekends, and special events.

The referenced salary range is based on PCOM good faith belief at the time of posting.
