What Your Job Will Be Like

We seek Electromechanical Technologists to aid our teams in the design, realization, and operation of electronic, avionic, and computer systems in support of missile and rocket programs with the Strike Systems group of the Integrated Military Systems Center. Our work involves laboratory testing of hypersonic systems navigation, guidance, and control implementations in Hardware-in-the-Loop testers and field testing of advanced navigation warfare and flight control systems technologies. Our teams routinely travel to launch sites such as Sandia's Kauai Test Facility, NASA Wallops Flight Facility, and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to support fielding operations in addition to other field test locations.

The successful candidate will contribute to high-performing teams developing flight and ground systems through engagement across technical readiness levels (e.g., TRL 2-9) and through a wide range of technical rigor (e.g., prototype to weapons systems delivery).

In this role you may be called on to:

  • Support execution of qualification testing, including scheduling, preparation, assembly, execution, and/or reporting.
  • Maintain component testers, preferably both hardware and software.
  • Maintain lab space, including small parts inventory, component inventory, and safety/compliance.
  • Support field testing, both on and off site, including ground and air test events, as well as overnight test events.
  • Procure hardware as needed/directed.
  • Design and fabricate custom test fixtures.
  • Create and interpret equipment usage procedures and connection diagrams.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot optical, RF, and electrical systems in laboratory and field environments.
  • Participate in mission planning, logistics coordination, and field site preparation.
  • Conduct hands-on, time-sensitive work in a self-directed manner.
  • Support field and RF test planning activities, including coordination of necessary equipment and test articles, coordination of resources to attend and manage tests, writing of test plans and test after-action reports.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$74,700 - $144,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

  • Electrical or mechanical engineering with hands-on experience
  • Fabrication of custom cables
  • Soldering (Desired: IPC Class 3 qualified)
  • Mechanical CAD capable in SolidWorks or Creo
  • Python/MATLAB competency to support data logging, analysis activities, and visualization of technical results
  • Electrical and RF measurement equipment (e.g. oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, multi-meter)
  • Experience with hand and power tool use
  • Works effectively either independently or with a team
  • Ability to read and contribute to engineering drawings or schematics
  • Creating, updating, and documenting test procedures, test reports, and failure reports
  • Strong background in the use of Microsoft Excel
About Our Team

The Navigation, Guidance, & Control (NGC) Department (5442) develops and delivers integrated, system-level NGC solutions for the hypersonic strike domain space, enabled by embedded software development and test for real-time applications. Our multi-disciplinary team establishes confidence in our software products through high fidelity six degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) dynamic modeling & simulation, Continuous Integration & Continuous Development (CI/CD), Software-in-the-Loop (SWIL) testing, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) testing, and integrated system hardware testing. We work closely with sister departments to mature emerging NGC technologies and verify weapon system integration compatibility. Sponsored by the Department of Defense, we team with industry throughout the development cycle which ultimately culminates in high consequence flight test demonstrations. We take pride in our reputation for delivering robust, high performance hypersonic flight control solutions for our sponsors and a responsibility for transitioning this next-generation technology to industry to enable an operational hypersonic strike capability for the warfighter.

The Navigation Warfare (Navwar) Department (5443) seeks to develop technology for robust and resilient navigation in increasingly challenging operational environments. Through Navigation Warfare Assessments to characterize and respond to US navigation contestation, engagement with the national Navwar community, and R&D towards the development of GPS-denied and contested technologies such as Alt-PNT (Position, Navigation, and Timing), the Navwar department creates enduring capabilities to support warfighter needs in increasingly contested navigation engagements.

The Navigation Guidance Control & Sensing (NGC&S) Department (5444) develops and demonstrates next generation flight control systems technologies in support of Integrated Military Systems programs. The department strives to provide leadership to the Laboratory and the Nation through innovation, creativity, rapid development, practical application, and demonstration of NGC&S mod/sim and prototype sensor technologies. Game-changing hardware and software based technologies are developed, integrated, and tested with the intent of demonstrating achievable and differentiating capabilities that enable the Warfighter and improve the National security posture.

Autonomy for Hypersonics (A4H) Department (5449) manages an innovative research portfolio in autonomous systems development and flight demonstrations of technological advancements. A4H supports the research and development of software, autonomy algorithms, prototype hardware, target recognition, and navigation/guidance/control. We actively partner with domain experts both at the Labs and throughout the nation to implement high-impact research to meet national defense needs. The challenging flight environment and limited available flight data make hypersonics one of the most complex applications for autonomy.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
