Job Title: Technical Writer II Location: Houston, TX (Downtown Area) - Hybrid (Monday-Thursday in office, Friday remote) Position Type: Contract (Through December 31, 2026, with potential for extension/permanent conversion) Compensation: Up to $66.00/hour (Maximum Bill Rate) Position Summary: We are seeking a mid-to-senior level Technical Writer to join an enterprise-wide Management of Change (MOC) team for a major utilities provider in downtown Houston. This role is responsible for translating complex technical information, operational workflows, and software procedures into clear, user-friendly documentation for diverse audiences across the enterprise. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, highly collaborative professional capable of leading documentation projects from initiation to distribution. Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, edit, and maintain high-quality standard operating procedures (SOPs), standard work instructions (SWIs), and technical process guides.
- Own the end-to-end creation, production, and distribution of a monthly enterprise-wide communications newsletter summarizing change items.
- Partner closely with cross-functional business stakeholders, engineers, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to map out business and physical field processes in real time.
- Attend on-site, multi-day process mapping workshops at regional service centers to capture, update, and validate technical workflows live.
- Organize and structure content logically to ensure maximum compliance, navigation ease, and usability.
- Operate independently and manage multiple writing projects concurrently within a fast-paced environment.
- Provide business-as-usual documentation continuity during major weather events/storms while standard team members are deployed to field emergency duty.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, or a related field required.
- Experience: 2 to 8+ years of hands-on technical writing experience (seniority ceiling is flexible based on bill rate alignment).
- Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word (formatting, layout, styles) and Microsoft Excel.
- Core Capabilities: Proven track record of interviewing stakeholders and converting complex workflows into actionable step-by-step procedures. Strong multitasking and project management capabilities.
- Travel: Willingness to travel locally within the greater Houston territory (e.g., Katy, Fort Bend) a few times a quarter to attend workshops or shadow operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience writing procedures within the Utilities, Energy, Oil & Gas, or heavily regulated infrastructure sectors.
- Experience mapping workflows using Microsoft Visio or tracking projects in Microsoft Project.
- Familiarity with structured technical authoring tools like MadCap Flare.
- Experience working directly within a Management of Change (MOC) framework or department.
