Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Job Overview
A leading academic research institution is seeking an Animal Technician to support laboratory animal care operations. This role is responsible for providing daily husbandry, animal health monitoring, sanitation, record keeping, and facility maintenance in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. The position supports research programs involving laboratory animals, including rodents and other species.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals.
  • Change cages, racks, bedding, food, and water according to established procedures.
  • Maintain animal housing areas and equipment following sanitation and regulatory standards.
  • Operate cage washers, autoclaves, and other sanitation equipment.
  • Monitor animal health and promptly report concerns to veterinary and research staff.
  • Maintain accurate records, including:
    • Animal health surveillance logs
    • Feed and per-diem records
    • Temperature and humidity logs
    • Animal receipt and disposition records
  • Support compliance with animal welfare regulations and research protocols.
  • Use computers and electronic systems for reporting, communication, training, and timekeeping.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 1 year of animal handling, animal care, or laboratory animal sanitation experience.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry practices, including feeding, caging, and housing requirements.
  • Experience identifying and reporting animal health concerns.
  • Familiarity with cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization procedures.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including email and electronic record systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, and reaching.
  • Ability to work on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, safety glasses, masks, protective clothing, and respirators when necessary.

Preferred Certifications

  • Training equivalent to Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification (AALAS) is beneficial.
