Job Title: Animal Technician Location(s): San Francisco, CA Position Summary Seeking an Animal Technician to support laboratory animal care operations in a biomedical research environment. This role is responsible for daily animal husbandry, health monitoring, sanitation, record keeping, and facility maintenance while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standard operating procedures. The position supports the care of laboratory animals, including rodents, and works closely with supervisors, veterinary staff, researchers, and compliance personnel. Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals.
- Change cages, racks, bedding, food, and water according to established procedures.
- Maintain animal housing areas and equipment in compliance with sanitation and regulatory standards.
- Operate cage washers, autoclaves, and other animal care equipment.
- Monitor animal health and promptly report concerns to appropriate staff.
- Maintain accurate records, including:
- Animal health surveillance logs
- Feed logs
- Temperature and humidity records
- Animal receipt and disposition records
- Per-diem documentation
- Support research activities through approved technical procedures.
- Follow all safety, biosecurity, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation equipment experience.
- Knowledge of animal husbandry, feeding, caging, and housing requirements.
- Familiarity with sanitation, disinfection, sterilization processes, cage washers, and autoclaves.
- Understanding of laboratory animal welfare regulations and compliance requirements.
- Ability to identify and communicate animal health concerns.
- Basic computer skills, including email and electronic record management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including protective clothing, gloves, masks, eye protection, and respirators when necessary.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- One of the following:
- AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician-equivalent training plus 1 year of animal care experience, or
- High school diploma/GED plus 2 years of relevant animal care experience, or
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
