About the Job

This Senior Laboratory Technician position is located in the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department in the Minnesota Urolith Center on the St. Paul Campus. The Minnesota Urolith Center receives approximately 90,000 urinary stone submissions annually.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibility will be to assist with projects related to analysis of biogenic urinary minerals (uroliths). The work may include:

  • Laboratory Analysis & Technical Support (55%)
    • Sample sectioning and quantitative mineral analysis. Duties require attention to detail and accurate documentation of laboratory procedures and results.
    • Operates or uses a variety of laboratory equipment used in analysis of urinary minerals. This may include the use of: pH meter, stereomicroscope, polarizing microscope, infrared spectroscope, centrifuges, and/or computer.
    • Provides technical assistance to laboratory colleagues, graduate students, external clinicians, and others by performing analysis of urinary minerals.
  • Sample Intake, Data Entry, and Documentation (30%)
    • Package opening and documentation of sample receipt.
    • Performs accurate data entry of epidemiologic information regarding each urolith submission.
  • Data Retrieval, Client Communictions, and Archiving (10%)
    • Accesses epidemiologic database to retrieve data.
    • Responding to inquiries regarding samples submitted to the Minnesota Urolith Center.
    • Distribution and archiving of completed samples and reports.
  • Laboratory Maintenance and Operations (5%)
    • Participates in ordering, preparing and stocking supplies, and maintaining equipment and laboratory area.
    • Assists with other special projects or initiatives as needed.

Work Environment

  • This work is generally performed at The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, and at the Veterinary Medical Center.
  • This work environment may include exposure to noise, bright/low lighting, temperature variations, and allergens such as mold, dust, hay and animal hair and dander.
  • Position will include 6-8 hours of computer and/or microscope use daily.
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduation or the equivalent with some science courses
  • 2 years of experience in relevant academic and work experience may be substituted

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience performing computer data entry, demonstrated experience using Microsoft Word, Excel
  • Previous laboratory experience/coursework including microscopy and optical crystallography desirable
  • Position requires the ability to sit for 6-8 hours using computers for data entry and/or stereomicroscope and polarizing microscope for quantitative mineral analysis
  • Employees must be highly accurate and detail oriented
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: Starting rate is $23.30/hr

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
