You Are: UST is searching for a Lead Backend Developer with AWS to design and build secure, scalable backend services and APIs for cloud-native ML Applications. The opportunity: * Lead backend architecture and implementation for cloud-native services on AWS. * Design and build RESTful APIs, asynchronous/event-driven integrations, and microservices. * Develop services using modern backend languages/frameworks ( Python, Java, or NodeJS), based on program standards. * Build serverless and/or containerized services using AWS patterns such as Lambda, API Gateway, Fargate/ECS/EKS, and managed data services as appropriate. * Implement secure access controls, secrets/configuration management, logging, monitoring, and fault handling. * Drive code quality, unit/integration testing, deployment automation, and production support readiness. * Collaborate with frontend, DevOps, platform, and product teams to deliver resilient backend services. This position description identifies the responsibilities and tasks typically associated with the performance of the position. Other relevant essential functions may be required. What you need: * 7+ years of backend software engineering experience, including lead-level design or delivery responsibility. * Strong hands-on proficiency in at least one major backend stack: Python, Java Springboot or NodeJS * Strong experience designing and implementing microservices and REST APIs. * Experience building on AWS using services such as Lambda, GCP Apigee X, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, and container services as relevant. * Strong understanding of API security standards especially mTLS for B2B API integrations * Experience with serverless and/or container-based deployment models. * Experience with IaC tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation. * Experience with event-driven architecture, message queues, or stream-based integration. * Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation. * Strong understanding of cloud security, least privilege IAM, and production observability. * Familiarity with performance tuning, resiliency, caching, error handling, and API scalability patterns. * Experience mentoring developers and leading code/design reviews. * Nice-to-Have Skills * Polyglot Engineering Capabilities (Multi language fluency) * Familiarity with AI/ML service integration on AWS, including SageMaker or Bedrock. * Experience with distributed tracing and advanced observability. * Exposure to healthcare, regulated domains, or high-compliance environments (if relevant to the project) Compensation can differ depending on factors including but not limited to the specific office location, role, skill set, education, and level of experience. UST provides a reasonable range of compensation for roles that may be hired in various U.S. markets as set forth below. Role Location: Illinois Compensation Range : $82,000-$123,000 Benefits Full-time, regular employees accrue a minimum of 10 days of paid vacation per year, receive 6 days of paid sick leave each year (pro-rated for new hires throughout the year), 10 paid holidays, and are eligible for paid bereavement leave and jury duty. They are eligible to participate in the Company's 401(k) Retirement Plan with employer matching. They and their dependents residing in the US are eligible for medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as the following Company-paid Employee Only benefits: basic life insurance, accidental death and disability insurance, and short- and long-term disability benefits. Regular employees may purchase additional voluntary short-term disability benefits, and participate in a Health Savings Account (HSA) as well as a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for healthcare, dependent child care, and/or commuting expenses as allowable under IRS guidelines. Benefits offerings vary in Puerto Rico. Part-time employees receive 6 days of paid sick leave each year (pro-rated for new hires throughout the year) and are eligible to participate in the Company's 401(k) Retirement Plan with employer matching. Full-time temporary employees receive 6 days of paid sick leave each year (pro-rated for new hires throughout the year) and are eligible to participate in the Company's 401(k) program with employer matching. They and their dependents residing in the US are eligible for medical, dental, and vision insurance. Part-time temporary employees receive 6 days of paid sick leave each year (pro-rated for new hires throughout the year). All US employees who work in a state or locality with more generous paid sick leave benefits than specified here will receive the benefit of those sick leave laws.
