Position Summary:
Under direct supervision of the lab supervisor; employees process samples, update sample inventory and complete services for orders from clients. Communicate with lab supervisor about work orders. Assists in the maintenance of lab equipment and monitor freezers during business hours and off hours. Staff perform all duties according to approved SOPs and Project Specific Job Aids.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform pre analytical specimen preparation, including check in and ID Validation of specimens, identifying appropriate Service workflows based on SOPs/Project Specific Job Aids, evaluate specimen quality upon receipt, aliquoting and DNA/RNA extraction. Prepare samples for storage, send out and special requests.
  • Ensure sample integrity by performing spectrometric and fluorescence quality control assays
  • Operate Laboratory Information Management System (BioSTOR), such as querying databases, ordering services, and closing work orders.
  • Provide courteous and timely customer service to providers calling or visiting the lab. Handle more complex inquiries.
  • Maintain workplace in a neat and orderly fashion. Monitor supply inventory to keep work area adequately stocked and orders as necessary.
  • Monitors specimen workflow and ensures quick response for STAT orders.
  • Participate in assigned departmental Quality Improvement processes, as necessary.
  • During business hours (8am to 6pm) monitor freezer performance to ensure integrity of specimens used for clinical and research purposes.
  • During off hours (6pm to 8am, weekend and holiday), carry a pager connected to a remote temperature alarm system. Lab employees at the Biobank carry the Freezer On-Call Pager for 1-week rotation. The on-call employee is obligated to monitor alarms and must respond to alarms in less than 2 hours in case of an emergency.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
  • An Associate's Degree is required. Bachelor's preferred.
Experience:
  • 2 years' experience with an Associate's Degree; No experience required with Bachelor's Degree.
  • Skills to perform statistical calculation for data reporting.
  • Knowledge of MS Office software especially Excel.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques and equipment.

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.

Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
