Position Overview

Position Summary

Eastern New Mexico University Ruidoso seeks a full-time Social Sciences and Humanities Faculty member who will also serve as Department Chair. The position is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in college-level social sciences courses in both in-person and online formats. The faculty member will teach a reduced load of courses in psychology, criminal justice, or history as assigned, promote student success through active and applied learning, support the development and continuous improvement of social sciences curricula, and contribute to assessment and program review. A consistent on-campus presence is required to support instruction, student engagement, departmental coordination, and academic leadership.


Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach a reduced load (12 credit hours per semester) of social sciences or humanities courses each semester in live, hybrid, HyFlex, and online formats as assigned.
  • Teach courses in psychology, criminal justice, or history based on institutional need and faculty qualifications.
  • Maintain 10 on-campus office hours weekly to support student learning, advising within the faculty role, and engagement.
  • Develop and update curricula, lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments that align with program outcomes, institutional learning objectives, and transfer expectations.
  • Evaluate student mastery of course objectives and learning outcomes using multiple measures, including exams, writing assignments, projects, discussions, presentations, and other assessments.
  • Maintain professional and academic credentials relevant to assigned teaching areas in the social sciences.
  • Successfully complete Quality Matters (QM) training and design certification to ensure course quality and alignment with institutional standards.
  • Participate in program and institutional assessment activities, using data to improve course effectiveness, success rates, and student outcomes in social sciences courses
  • Collaborate with faculty across departments to support transfer and workforce programs.
  • Participate in department and campus meetings, committees, and professional development activities.
  • Use student support systems to promote early intervention, retention, and program completion.
  • Maintain accurate course records and meet all reporting deadlines, including customized syllabi submission, roster certification, midterm and final grades, and maintenance of electronic gradebooks and rubrics.
  • Foster a classroom environment that encourages student participation, persistence, and academic growth.
  • Support student recruitment, retention, and outreach efforts for social sciences programs and related pathways.
  • Provide vision and leadership for the Social Sciences department, including scheduling, program planning, assessment, faculty collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Communicate closely with the Vice President of Student Learning and Success, keeping him or her apprised of activities within the department, and participate as an active member of the Academic Council.
  • Communicate closely with department personnel, keeping them informed of any department, campus, community, state, or federal issue affecting them.
  • Assist students who are seeking a degree or certificate within the department with course selections.
  • Active participation as a member of the Academic Council
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the college.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in psychology, criminal justice, history, social sciences, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited university, with qualifications that meet accrediting expectations for assigned courses.
  • Qualifications to teach in psychology, criminal justice, or history.
  • Two years of recent teaching at an accredited post-secondary institution, or a combination of current discipline-related employment and instruction at an accredited post-secondary institution, or equivalent secondary teaching experience with evidence of college-level readiness.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching college-level courses in psychology, criminal justice, or history.
  • Experience using a learning management system and basic instructional technologies to support teaching and learning.
  • Commitment to serving a diverse student population, including first-generation, rural, adult, and dual credit learners.

Preferred:

  • Doctorate in psychology, criminal justice, history, social sciences, or a closely related discipline.
  • Community college experience teaching and relating to students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience teaching in more than one of the following disciplines: psychology, criminal justice, and history.
  • Online teaching and online course development experience, preferably using the Quality Matters framework and certification.
  • Experience developing curricula, measuring achievement of student learning objectives, evaluating course efficacy, and assessing and improving student learning.
  • Experience with departmental leadership, faculty collaboration, scheduling, or program oversight.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills working with students, colleagues, staff, supervisors, and community partners.
  • Endorsement of the community college teaching philosophy that supports the goal of success for all students through active learning experiences and engagement.
  • Understanding of rural communities and students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to provide vision and leadership for department programs, student learning, and student completion initiatives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate closely with department personnel, keeping them informed of any department, campus, community, state, or federal issues affecting them.
  • Ability to assist students seeking a degree/certificate within the department with course selections.


Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

Work is performed during normal work hours, with some evenings and weekends to meet deadlines.Work is sedentary in nature, which at times requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a consistent amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
