The Respiratory Therapist (RT) Senior provides expert respiratory care and serves as a clinical resource and mentor within the department. The RT Senior practices independently across multiple specialty areas and supports evidence-based initiatives that improve patient outcomes and enhance quality and safety. This role integrates advanced clinical skills, education, and quality improvement to support professional development, optimize care delivery, and promote collaboration across the interdisciplinary team.
Duties & Responsibilities

- Functions as a clinical resource and mentor across multiple specialty areas; guides complex respiratory care planning during rounds and consultations.
- Implements and evaluates evidence-based respiratory practice, using clinical indicators and outcomes data to guide decision-making and improve patient care.
- Leads or contributes to quality and patient safety initiatives, identifying improvement opportunities and developing evidence-based solutions.
- Supports onboarding and professional development of Respiratory Therapists and students through coaching, competency assessment, and educational activities.
- Contributes to department education programs, including simulations, skills validation, and clinical training; assists in developing and delivering instructional content.
- Evaluates emerging evidence, research, and standards of care; assists in integrating new technology and therapeutic modalities into practice.
- Participates in event reviews and collaborates on action plans to enhance safety and prevent recurrence.
- Uses clinical and departmental data to identify trends, evaluate outcomes, and recommend process or workflow improvements.
- Provides input on policy, procedure, and practice guideline updates to ensure alignment with professional standards and organizational goals.
- Represents respiratory care in committees, councils, and workgroups to support consistent, high-quality practice across the organization.
- Participates in scholarly or professional activities, such as presentations, abstracts, or conference involvement.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION: Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy/Care
EXPERIENCE: Six (6) years of experience delivering respiratory therapy or respiratory care, including at least three (3) years of neonatal and pediatric experience
CERTIFICATION(S):
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Registered or Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT or CPFT) by the NBRC required only if performing pulmonary function diagnostic testing
Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Care Specialist (NPS) by the NBRC
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or American Safety and Health Institute accepted) with at least 6 months remaining before expiration
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
LICENSURE(S): State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Respiratory Therapist license
PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP(S): Active membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC)
Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
Hourly Range: $38.34 to $57.52
