Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a masters degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics or health informatics.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a masters degree in a health science, biomedical science or environmental science field with two years work experience in epidemiology.

Overview

The Epidemiologist 1 will support the Tennessee Department of Health's Child Fatality Review (CFR) Program through epidemiologic surveillance, data analysis, quality assurance, reporting, and program evaluation activities related to child deaths across Tennessee. This position will also support the implementation and completion of deliverables associated with the CDC Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and Sudden Death in the Young (SDY) Case Registry grant.
The position works collaboratively with internal TDH programs, the state and local Child Fatality Review teams, local and national partners to improve the quality, timeliness, and use of child death review data to inform prevention efforts and reduce preventable infant and child deaths.

Responsibilities

  1. Lead epidemiologic surveillance, data management, validation, quality assurance, analysis, and reporting activities related to child fatality, infant mortality, and SUID/SDY data systems to support timely reporting, program monitoring, and completion of CDC grant deliverables.
  2. Identify trends, disparities, and emerging issues related to child injury, infant mortality, and sudden unexpected infant deaths and collaborate with colleagues to translate analytic findings into actionable recommendations and data products suitable for lay and professional audiences.
  3. Design, develop, and maintain reporting systems and data dissemination products, including evaluation plans and reports, dashboards, infographics, interactive maps, legislative reports, and data requests using SAS, Tableau, ArcGIS, and related analytic and visualization tools.
  4. Prepare and support dissemination of the legislatively mandated annual Child Fatality Review (CFR) report, including development of data analyses, tables, charts, summaries, and supporting materials.
  5. Provide epidemiologic expertise and technical assistance to support program implementation, evaluation activities, strategic decision-making, and continuous quality improvement efforts.
