SFCS is seeking a Structural Engineer with approximately 3-7 years of experience to join our Roanoke, Virginia office. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside architects, engineers, interior designers and planners in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment while contributing to meaningful projects that positively impact communities across the country.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical foundation in structural engineering, a desire to continue growing professionally, and a passion for delivering thoughtful, practical, and innovative design solutions.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or actively pursuing licensure.
  • Approximately 3-7 years of experience in structural engineering with a focus on commercial, institutional, healthcare, senior living, educational, or government facilities.
  • Experience designing structural steel, cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete, masonry, cold-formed metal framing, and wood-framed structures.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes and industry standards.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software such as RAM Structural System, ENERCALC, FloorVibe, StruWare or similar programs.
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining attention to detail and quality.


Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and project teams to develop efficient, code-compliant, and cost-effective structural solutions.
  • Participate in project planning, structural system selection, and preliminary design studies.
  • Perform structural analysis and design for new construction, additions, renovations, and adaptive reuse projects.
  • Conduct field investigations and evaluations of existing structures to support renovation and rehabilitation efforts.
  • Prepare structural calculations, technical reports, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Coordinate structural systems with architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and civil engineering disciplines.
  • Develop structural construction documents utilizing Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Utilize structural analysis and design software to evaluate and verify engineering solutions.
  • Participate in construction administration activities, including shop drawing review, responses to RFIs, site observations, and evaluation of proposed changes.
  • Support and mentor junior engineering staff while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Stay current with evolving building codes, design technologies, and industry best practices.
