Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Electric Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Principal Program Engineer is responsible for overseeing the engineering and technical disciplines required to successfully complete projects. This role manages multiple initiatives, including planning projects, establishing project criteria, coordinating project reviews, and ensuring proper implementation of project elements. The incumbent will schedule, plan, forecast, resource, and manage all technical activities to ensure project accuracy and quality from conception through completion. This position is also accountable for team deliverables and provides oversight and guidance to lower-level engineers and technicians.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate, and monitor assigned engineering projects. Assign responsibilities and mentor project team members.
  • Develop strong partnerships with business stakeholders and gain a deep understanding of their objectives. Interact with clients to interpret their needs and requirements and represent them in the field.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable codes, standards, QA/QC policies, performance requirements, and specifications.
  • Support Agile project delivery by balancing team performance with tight deadlines. Develop specifications for required project equipment.
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions. Evaluate engineering tasks and implement necessary improvements.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to project managers and other stakeholders. Collaborate with senior engineers to improve project execution methods and maintain profitability.
  • Perform quality control reviews of budgets, schedules, plans, and personnel performance, and report on project status.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in design and visualization software such as AutoCAD
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, with the ability to quickly learn new software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Solid understanding of GD&T principles
  • Familiarity with applicable rules, regulations, best practices, and performance standards

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity

    • [OR] Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with seven (7) or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity



Preferred Experience

  • Demonstrated expertise in engineering and construction contracts, as well as technical documentation required for complete bid and construction packages. This role oversees and coordinates internal and external engineering teams to produce comprehensive construction documents for both major and minor electric generating plant modifications.
  • Experience as a consulting design engineer at a regional or national engineering firm, with broad and in-depth knowledge in civil, structural, or geotechnical design and construction. Responsible for developing detailed scopes of work for external engineering firms and managing the quality, progress, and delivery of engineering and construction documents.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and results-driven, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously. Strong communication, coordination, and time management skills are essential, as the role requires independent work as an engineering lead with minimal day-to-day oversight.
  • Experience managing and directing engineering consultants (including sub-consultants), as well as negotiating scope, schedule, and budget to meet project requirements.
  • General knowledge of traditional power plant systems and renewable energy systems is preferred but not required.
