6:30 am - 3:30 pm; Monday - Friday. Occasional evening and weekend hours will be required, as necessary.

Mandatory Position

This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the building as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
Performs advanced diagnostic, maintenance, and repair work on a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, including complex mechanical, electrical, and emerging systems. Responsibilities include detailed analysis, troubleshooting, repair, and component replacement to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. This role also supports the Fleet Service Center Supervisor by assisting with daily leadership functions, promoting adherence to established SOPs, and delivering high-quality customer service in all vehicle and equipment repair activities.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the field of work related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Essential Job Duties

  • Perform advanced diagnostics, maintenance, and repair on a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, including internal combustion engines and electric vehicles (e.g., Club Car, MAX EV, GEM platforms)., Troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic systems using OEM diagnostic tools, schematics, and software. Diagnose and repair EV systems, including battery packs, controllers, chargers, and associated high-voltage components, following all required safety protocols. Conduct preventative services in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and Fleet Management SOPs, ensuring all inspections and services are completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Perform repairs on key vehicle systems, including braking systems, suspension, steering, drivetrain, HVAC, fuel systems, and engine components. Utilize advanced diagnostic equipment to interpret fault codes, analyze system performance, and implement effective repair solutions. Document all work performed in the fleet management system (FASTER), including detailed and accurate repair notes using the "Three C's" (Concern, Cause, Correction). Ensure all work is completed in compliance with safety standards, including OSHA regulations, University policies, and high-voltage/EV safety procedures (e.g., PPE, lockout/tagout).
  • Maintain and inspect tools, equipment, and shop areas to ensure safe and efficient operations. Communicate repair status, findings, and recommendations through the Fleet Management front office to support clear and consistent customer service. Assist in mentoring and supporting other technicians by sharing technical knowledge and promoting adherence to established SOPs and best practices. Identify opportunities to improve shop efficiency, service delivery, and operational processes, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Support preparation and readiness of fleet units for service, inspections, and departmental use, ensuring reliability and safety. Conduct comprehensive North Carolina Emissions and Safety Inspections.

  • Perform related duties as assigned to support Fleet Management operations, Service Center efficiency, and departmental goals.
  • Assist with special projects, pilot programs, and implementation of new technologies (e.g., telematics, EV integration, fleet systems) as directed.
  • Support emergency, after-hours, or adverse weather operations as needed to maintain critical University services.
  • Participate in required training and professional development to maintain and enhance technical skills, including emerging vehicle and equipment technologies.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment in accordance with shop standards and expectations.
  • Collaborate with team members and leadership to support a positive, respectful, and solutions-focused workplace culture.
  • Provide support across Fleet Management functions when operational needs require, including coordination with warehouse, logistics, or field service activities.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Demonstrated experience in automotive/internal combustion engine (ICE) diagnostics, maintenance, and repair. Specialized training, experience, certifications in electric vehicle (EV) systems, including high-voltage safety, battery systems, and diagnostics for platforms such as Club Car, GEM, MAX EV, or similar. Experience working in a fleet management or institutional environment (e.g., university, government, or commercial fleet operations).
  • Demonstrated experience in diagnosing and repairing complex electrical and electronic systems. Welding and fabrication experience to support equipment and vehicle repairs. Experience with preventive service programs and compliance-driven environments.
  • Familiarity with telematics systems (e.g., Samsara or similar) and data-driven fleet operations. Demonstrated experience in automotive and/or equipment maintenance, including diagnostic and repair of internal combustion engine (ICE) systems.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems related to vehicles and equipment. Experience using diagnostic tools, equipment, and service manuals to troubleshoot and repair vehicles and equipment. Ability to perform preventive service and general repairs in a safe, efficient, and professional manner. Basic knowledge of safety standards and regulations, including proper use of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Completion of an accredited automotive technical training program (e.g., Universal Technical Institute (UTI) or equivalent). ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) A-Series certification(s) or the ability to acquire within one year of employment, offered as Professional Development.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid Driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Completion of an accredited automotive technical training program
  • North Carolina State Emissions and Safety Inspection Certification or able to acquire within three months of employment.
