WHAT WE DO Norris, Inc. provides residential care, shelter care, recreation, and therapeutic services to youth in a structured, trauma-informed environment. Staff at Norris have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children and adolescents by promoting safety, emotional growth, recreation, and positive life experiences. Norris is situated on 800 acres in Mukwonago and includes a pavilion area with a swimming pond where the youth can swim and fish from the pier. There is a nice beach area with a sand volleyball ball court.

Job Description Norris is seeking a dependable and safety-focused part-time Lifeguard to supervise recreational swimming activities during afternoon, evening and weekend hours. The position has flexible hours and the youth can be scheduled for swimming activities according to your schedule. This position plays an important role in providing a safe, structured, and enjoyable swimming environment for the youth in our Residential Care and Shelter Care Programs. Under the supervision of designated program leadership, the Lifeguard is responsible for monitoring all swimming activities, maintaining water safety standards, responding to emergencies, and supporting a positive recreational experience for the youth in our care. The Lifeguard works collaboratively with Norris staff to ensure all aquatic activities are conducted in accordance with agency policies, safety procedures, and trauma-informed care practices. This position requires mature judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm and attentive in a dynamic environment working with youth.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pond, dock/beach area, and surrounding recreation spaces.
- Continuously monitor swimmers and assigned areas to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with all safety rules and procedures.
- Respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations in accordance with Norris policies and lifeguarding standards.
- Administer first aid, CPR, AED, and water rescue procedures when necessary.
- Enforce all aquatic safety rules and behavioral expectations in a respectful and professional manner.
- Provide supervision and support to youth participating in recreational swimming activities.
- Create an environment that is welcoming, structured, supportive, and safe for all youth and staff.
- Work collaboratively with Youth Care Specialists and other Norris staff during recreation and program activities.
- Inspect and maintain rescue equipment, first aid supplies, and recreational equipment; promptly report any safety concerns or maintenance needs.
- Assist with setup and cleanup of swimming and recreation areas before and after activities.
- Complete incident, accident, and behavioral documentation as required.
- Participate in required trainings and maintain all required certifications.
- Uphold the mission, values, and trauma-informed care philosophy of Norris.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age due to program and supervision requirements involving youth.
- Current American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Certification required.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required.
- Ability to successfully complete a swimming and water rescue skills assessment.
- Prior experience working with youth, recreation programs, camps, or residential care settings preferred.
- Ability to remain calm, alert, and professional in emergency situations.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to enforce rules and boundaries in a positive and respectful manner.
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and perform physical rescue duties as needed.
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays based on program needs.
