Description

The maintenance task for the Frederick Police Department is a critical one because of the number of people, both sworn and civilian members, occupying a 65k sq ft facility. The Building Maintenance Technician must be able to work independently and make decisions regarding maintenance problems as they arise. Adequate performance of this responsibility by the maintenance staff requires attention to detail, flexibility, and dedication to the overall task. The Building Maintenance Technician shall have this responsibility, under the primary supervision of the Manager of Fiscal Affairs, of developing and carrying out an ongoing and preventative maintenance program, and minor repair jobs for the entire Frederick Police Department Headquarters.


Example of Duties

  • Responsible for all HVAC maintenance and checking mechanical aspects on a weekly basis, including working with yearly Building Maintenance Contracts.
  • Develop and maintain a preventative maintenance schedule for building mechanics
  • Keeps the Fiscal Unit Administrative Assistant informed of maintenance or department-used supplies, i.e., light bulbs, filters, copy paper, etc., that need to be purchased and stocked.
  • Replaces all burned-out light bulbs or fixtures as needed.
  • Checks emergency lighting and alarm system monthly. At the same time, checks all fire extinguishers and ensures the yearly inspection by the Fire Marshal is completed.
  • Works with several contractors doing monthly maintenance to the Elevator, Sprinkler System, Fire Alarm System, etc., per DPW requirements
  • Repairs broken items within the facility.
  • Paint and Wall repair as needed
  • Keeps rooftop patio clear of all leaves and snow to allow the drains to work properly.
  • During inclement winter weather, assist in clearing exterior surfaces of snow and ice
  • Keeps the gym insulation panels in proper condition, replacing ripped, torn and/or water-stained panels as needed.
  • Assists /facilitates with the Fiscal Affairs Unit Shipping and Receiving of deliveries coming into headquarters
  • Prepares and maintains yearly building maintenance budget for building and maintenance supplies.
  • Oversees any mechanical service contracts within the facility.
  • Clear all trash from the immediate exterior of the building, keeping all entrances and exits free from debris, etc.
  • Keep all interior and exterior drains flowing freely (i.e., floor drains in restrooms, locker rooms, exterior doorways, etc.)
  • Notifies the Fiscal Affairs Manager of the Department of Public Works of Work Orders for all outside repairs that need to be made as quickly as possible.
  • Operates a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices on a regular basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of work-related experience
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
  • A Vehicle Operator's license with a satisfactory driving record that meets the insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.
  • Ability to complete and pass a comprehensive background investigation. This position is safety-sensitive and requires a full background, including a polygraph.
REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):
  • Ability to read and interpret documents in English
  • Must be able to use hand tools.
  • Strong writing ability with technical writing experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand/or walk for long periods of time. This individual will regularly be required to move items weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to lift and move items weighing up to 100 pounds. This position requires the incumbent to work frequently at high elevations. The incumbent is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The incumbent must occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
