About this opportunity:

The Ball State University Digital Corps is looking for a Development Team Lead who is part mentor, part tech expert, and part creative problem-solver. In this role, you will be the go-to authority on all things development, overseeing projects from the first big idea to the final product while using industry-standard tools. You will spend your time guiding a talented group of undergraduate developers, hiring and coaching them through real-world software projects that keep the Digital Corps at the cutting edge of technology. What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function: Provide regular training and guidance to Digital Corps students focused on development and technology disciplines; serve as department authority on matters of development and technology, including software, trends, certifications, and industry standards; and oversee the development process and technology tools of Digital Corps projects from inception to completion.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Lead the Digital Corps development process by implementing standard technology stacks based on the needs of the project, and play an active role in all development projects from idea to delivery.

2. Complete all projects at a professional level using industry-standard tools and technologies.

3. Oversee a team of undergraduate developers working on development projects at the Digital Corps, including hiring new employees, creating an onboarding training program, assigning and reviewing work, evaluating students for promotion, and other day-to-day management tasks.

4. Work with others within the Division of Information Technology to evaluate new and emerging development software, workflows, and other industry trends, including AI-powered coding tools and techniques, to maintain the Digital Corps' mission to remain at the forefront of technology.

5. Support the Associate Vice President with managing Apple (iOS) and Android app stores for Ball State University.

6. Provide support and upkeep to legacy development projects as requested by Digital Corps campus partners.

7. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field from an accredited college or university by the date of appointment. Or, in lieu of a Bachelor's degree:

  • Associate's degree plus an additional combination of education or experience in computer science equivalent to two years. Or, in lieu of an Associate's degree:

  • High school diploma or GED plus an additional combination of education or experience in project management equivalent to four years.

  • At least two years of full-stack web development experience. Knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS, Git, and a relational database (e.g.,
    MySQL/Postgres). Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., code generation and code review) and best practices for integrating them into the development workflow.

  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills. Ability to lead, train, and coach undergraduate students in the field of computer science and project development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with functional React, knowledge of WordPress development, Redhat Linux, Microsoft Azure/Amazon Web Services.
