Where you will work

Augusta houses Clearwater Paper's largest paperboard facility and is home to more than 600 team members. Together, our team makes paperboard used in products across the United States, including food packaging, plates, cups and more. With nearly 65 years of operation, the mill spans 3,000 acres and runs two paper machines that collectively produce up to 1,940 tons per day.

Augusta is known worldwide for hosting The Masters golf tournament, but the city offers so much more. Located on the Savannah River on Georgia's eastern border, Augusta blends outdoor recreation with a vibrant arts and cultural scene. What you will do

The Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting day-to-day and long-term safety and health activities for all mill operations, as well as ensuring the mill is aligned with corporate initiatives and priorities. This role will interface directly with department leaders. Additionally, this role will interact with hourly safety coordinators, to lead change in the mill's safety culture. The Safety Specialist will ensure that mill employees understand and adhere to company and regulatory policies and standards. They will also be actively engaged in challenging the status quo to ensure high-performing safety compliance throughout the mill.

EHS Compliance



  • Ensure safe work practices comply with local, state and company standards are fully in place and enthusiastically supported.
  • Manage the safety process tools and tracking systems, hazard identification and remediation, and the fire system inspection process.
  • Regularly visit the manufacturing areas to provide coaching, recognition, supervision of safety practices and policies.
  • Provide leadership in developing, implementing, and managing safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Review, revise and develop Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.


EHS Program Leadership



  • Manage the Worker's Compensation process.
  • Manage the Contractor Safety Program.
  • Develop and implement safety training materials.
  • Assist Departments with incident investigations.


EHS Operational Support



  • Assist with visits from state and federal agencies (OSHA, DOT, Fire Marshal etc.).
  • Collaborate with Lead Team members, area leaders, and hourly safety coordinators to improve the workplace through development of improved procedures and following up on incidents.
  • Maintain positive and open relationship with hourly team members to understand concerns and work together on solutions.

  • Strong understanding of EHS compliance metrics; ability to develop and leverage EHS data to quantitively and analytically identify opportunities and define actions.

  • Interest in pulp and paper industry with curiosity to understand Clearwater Paper's businesses and approach.

What you will need



  • 3-5 years related experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field preferred
  • Experience in pulp and paper industry preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal EHS regulations.
  • Ability to act as a change leader by influencing all levels of the organization to drive continuous improvement in safety performance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and use of Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to learn software programs used for incident management, LOTO procedures and process information.
  • Must be results oriented and capable of driving the EHS process at a complex site.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively in a union environment.
  • Must be self-motivated, energetic, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be capable of creating quality work while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality and sensitive information.
  • Operating knowledge of industrial hygiene equipment.
  • Able to work in a high-speed manufacturing environment, sustained exposure to high-frequency noises, walking on concrete surfaces, heat, and cold and mill environments.
  • Must be able to read and interpret rules and regulations.
  • Able to wear and abide by Personal Protective Equipment that is required in the mill environment.
  • Able to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Could be exposed to hazardous chemicals used in the manufacturing process.
  • Willingness to respond to issues 24/7 when an incident occurs
