What you'll do

You are a capable, self-motivated data software engineer. You will be a member of the data engineering team working on tasks ranging from design, development, operations of data warehouse, data platform and data pipelines. We enjoy working closely with each other utilizing an Agile development methodology. Priorities can change quickly, but our team members are able to stay ahead to delight every one of our customers whether they are internal or external to Viasat.

The day-to-day

  • Lead the design and implementation of sub-second, highly scalable microservices on AWS and GCP using Python, supporting mission-critical payment gateway systems
  • Own architectural direction by producing and maintaining clear diagrams and documentation for both current and future-state systems
  • Independently design and manage cloud networking and security architecture, including subnetworks, security groups, routing, and secure system boundaries
  • Architect and optimize data ecosystems, including pipelines, data models, and data lake solutions, while guiding best practices for ORM integration across applications
  • Drive cloud infrastructure strategy and implementation, leveraging serverless and containerized technologies such as Kubernetes, Cloud Functions, Lambda, Step Functions, and Composer
  • Continuously improve system performance and reliability by proactively monitoring, tuning, and scaling data pipelines and distributed systems
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship, guiding junior engineers and influencing best practices across complex initiatives
  • Act as a subject matter expert, making independent decisions on architecture, tooling, and implementation approaches for large-scope or ambiguous problems

What you'll need

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in data engineering, with deep expertise in Python and/or Scala and a track record of delivering large-scale, high-impact data solutions
  • Advanced experience designing and optimizing modern data warehousing solutions (Snowflake, BigQuery), with strong command of SQL and performance tuning at scale
  • Expert knowledge of RDBMS technologies (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle), including data modeling, query optimization, and enterprise-grade implementations
  • Proven ability to design and lead CI/CD strategy, implementing automated build, test, and deployment pipelines for data and platform services
  • Demonstrated ownership in architecting and delivering highly scalable, resilient data services, including distributed and real-time systems
  • Strong hands-on expertise with distributed data frameworks such as Airflow, Spark, and Kafka, with the ability to guide best practices and architectural decisions
  • Deep experience operating in AWS and/or GCP environments, driving cloud-native patterns and infrastructure best practices
  • Advanced knowledge of big data and ETL/ELT frameworks, including designing end-to-end data pipelines and optimizing for performance, reliability, and cost
  • Strong problem-solving capability with a DevOps mindset, proactively identifying risks and driving solutions across the software lifecycle
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with experience collaborating across teams and mentoring engineers on complex technical challenges
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience)

What will help you on the job

  • Experience with GitHub Actions
  • Hands-on experience writing REST interfaces
  • Familiarity with analysis of systems requirements, identifications of gaps, and advise on implementable solutions
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, cloud-based infrastructure, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and other networking concepts
