Summary
Following an orientation period, the Cardiac Sonographer I is responsible for independently performing comprehensive echocardiograms and/or bubble studies for adult and/or pediatric patients in outpatient and hospital-based settings. The sonographer must demonstrate foundational knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and pathology in the assigned patient population. The sonographer is expected to understand the patient's exam rationale, acquire high-quality diagnostic images, and provide accurate preliminary findings in a timely manner. The sonographer will comply with patient privacy and safety guidelines and adhere to departmental and hospital policies. Responsibilities may change over time at the discretion of department leadership to meet the department's evolving needs.
Essential Functions
-Prepare exam rooms and ultrasound equipment in accordance with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols.
-Understand reasons for individual patient exams, review patient history, and prior reports/images.
-Apply proper positioning tools and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient comfort and prevent personal injury, provide safe and high-quality patient care, and ensure an exceptional patient and family experience.
-Perform comprehensive TTEs (transthoracic echo) independently within 6 months of hire.
-Perform ultrasound contrast and agitated saline (bubble) studies when indicated and complex portable studies when needed.
-Write preliminary reports to the interpreting physician.
-Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives and in all measures to support accreditation.
-Assist with scheduling as needed.
-Meet productivity and volume expectations as defined by department standards.

Education
Associate's degree Diagnostic Medical Sonographer preferred

Licenses and Credentials

  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer [RCS] - Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) required
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer [RDCS] - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) required
  • Basic Life Support [BLS] required

Experience

  • Sonographer experience 0-1 year required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • -Solid knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology in the specific population being cared for.
  • Understanding of cardiovascular diseases and conditions and related symptoms.
  • Ability to assess relevant medical history, patient-reported concerns, and any contraindications or limitations to echo testing.
  • Good understanding of equipment function and ultrasound physics.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient and staff safety and patient experience through adherence to safety protocols and best practices.
  • Ability to mobilize heavy ultrasound machines as well as occasionally lift patients from stretchers or wheelchairs, assist incontinent patients, and lift boxes of supplies.
  • Ability to spend prolonged time standing while working.
  • Ability to work as a team and collaborate with all role groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal and critical thinking skills with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, their families, and colleagues, including physicians, nurses, administrative staff, and peers.
