| Primary Purpose of Position |
Environmental Health and Safety (
EHS) professionals analyze work environments to design and implement programs to control, eliminate, and prevent disease, injury, and/or environmental impact caused by chemical, physical, radiological, and biological agents. The Environmental Specialist position focuses on the safety of University property and the surrounding campus environment, as well as the impacts which projects have to local watersheds, ecology, habitats, and environmental areas. In addition, the Environmental Specialist ensures safe work environments are present for all University and contracted employees through routine equipment inspections, jobsite safety assessments, and safety program management. This position involves risk analysis and program enforcement for environmental safety related areas, such as Clean Air, Respiratory Crystalline Silica, Hazardous Building Materials, Spill Prevention, Control & Countermeasures (
SPCC), Refrigerant Management, Pesticide Safety, Reclaimed Water, Stormwater, Environmental Stewardship, and more. This position will also work closely with other
EHS departments, such as fire & life safety, laboratory safety, and health & safety, to ensure University compliance across departments. Employees will be required to conduct inspections and inform the leadership of areas that may not be in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and employer policies.
The Environmental Specialist position serves as a technical expert in the specialty area and provides interpretation of applicable laws and guidelines, including
CFR,
OSHA,
EPA,
ASHRAE,
AHERA,
TSCA and others. This position may also serve as a first-responder to
EHS emergencies and is likely to manage these situations. Additionally, this position may conduct non-routine inspections and/or equipment reviews and provide classroom style training and hands-on instruction on equipment and policies. |
| Summary of Position Responsibilities |
- Responsible primarily for administering the Clean Air, Respiratory Crystalline Silica, Hazardous Building Materials, Spill Prevention, Control & Countermeasures (SPCC), Refrigerant Management, Pesticide Safety, Reclaimed Water, Stormwater, and Protected Species & Environmental Stewardship programs. Specific duties include, but are not limited to equipment inspections, equipment inventorying, qualified personnel inventory, meter calibration, risk assessments, data collection, safety management plans, safety assessments, and special projects. Inspect all assigned campus buildings, equipment, and environments to detect existing and potential safety and health hazards and compliance issues. Respond to any area of the campus to assess and investigate hazardous conditions or other safety and health concerns. Conduct or participate in accident or special investigations. Write reports detailing all findings, deficiencies, and recommended corrective actions. Maintain contact and follow up with appropriate personnel until resolution. Monitor and evaluate federal, state, local, and university policies on a continual basis for compliance-related activities. May be required to respond to incidents after hours.
- Responsible for offering and delivering safety compliance training to assigned departments and campus community. Instructional programs include, but are not limited to, Clean Air, Respiratory Crystalline Silica, Hazardous Building Materials, Spill Prevention, Control & Countermeasures (SPCC), Refrigerant Management, Pesticide Safety, Reclaimed Water, Stormwater, and Protected Species & Environmental Stewardship programs.
- Responsible for determining the level of university compliance with Environmental Safety core program elements. Serve in a supportive role for administering Clean Air, Respiratory Crystalline Silica, Hazardous Building Materials, Spill Prevention, Control & Countermeasures (SPCC), Refrigerant Management, Pesticide Safety, Reclaimed Water, Stormwater, and Protected Species & Environmental Stewardship programs. Ensure documents are accurate, closed within a timely manner, and filed appropriately.
- Assure compliance with local, state, federal, and industrial regulations within assigned program area(s). Ability to consult with various specialty agencies (DOI, EPA, OSHA, etc) for guidance on program structure, components, and effectiveness. Ability to provide technical support and consultation services to assigned units to determine EHS needs.
- Responsible for applying basic environmental, health, and safety (EHS) knowledge to assist assigned departments with EHS program enrollment, regulatory compliance implementation, hazard control techniques, development of safety management plans, loss prevention techniques, and regulatory compliance. Responsible for interpreting local, state, federal, and University requirements and providing technical support to the campus community. | Minimum Education/Experience |
- Bachelor's degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline; or
- Equivalent combination of training and experience.
- All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

| Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience |
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety guidelines, such as OSHA, CFR, TSCA, ASHRAE, etc.
- Knowledge of EHSA-Onsite or similar electronic data management systems.
- Experience with performing risk assessments (Consultative Service Reviews).
- Experience conducting equipment inspections, safety assessments, and incident investigations
- Knowledge of environmental plan reviews and permit approvals.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google, Adobe, and virtual meeting platforms.
- Experience writing field assessment, investigation, sampling, and monitoring reports.
- Experience with EHS Program administration.
- Ability to gather data, analyze and develop trend analysis reports.
EPA 608 certification preferred; other relevant certifications ASP, CSP, CIH.- Demonstrates knowledge, understanding and application of Clean Air, Respiratory Crystalline Silica, Hazardous Building Materials, Spill Prevention, Control & Countermeasures (SPCC), Refrigerant Management, Pesticide Safety, Reclaimed Water, Stormwater, and Protected Species & Environmental Stewardship programs.
- Demonstrates the ability to exercise sound judgment in applying and interpreting safety, compliance policies, procedures, and regulations.
