Description

Intern, Strategic Growth

Halff is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Strategic Growth Intern to support our strategic growth and M&A pipeline. This role sits at the intersection of business intelligence, competitive research, and growth strategy. You will support the evaluation and screening of acquisition targets by compiling firm profiles, synthesizing public data, and helping develop the analytical foundation that informs senior-level decisions.

This position provides direct exposure to enterprise-level growth strategy and M&A decision-making within a mid-market professional services firm, along with hands-on involvement in building research frameworks used by senior leadership. It offers a deeper understanding of how AEC firms assess market position, evaluate service-line portfolios, and identify acquisition targets, all while receiving mentorship from experienced growth and strategy professionals. Participants also develop a tangible body of work, contributing to real deliverables that influence actual decisions and create meaningful impact.

What you will do:

  • Research and compile firm profiles for potential acquisition targets using ENR rankings, LinkedIn, state licensing databases, company websites, and public filings
  • Build and maintain a structured screening database tracking target firms by service line, geography, headcount, and market position
  • Support first-pass scoring of targets against defined acquisition criteria (service-line fit, geographic expansion, client overlap, culture alignment)
  • Monitor industry news, M&A activity, and competitor movements in AEC and adjacent markets
  • Assist in preparing summary memos and comparison matrices for leadership review
  • Identify gaps in Halff's current service or geographic footprint that could be addressed through acquisition
  • Support special research projects related to market entry, competitive benchmarking, and growth strategy

What you will need:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Business, Finance, Urban Planning, Economics, Public Administration, or a related field
  • Junior, Senior, or Graduate student standing preferred
  • Strong research skills with demonstrated ability to synthesize information from multiple public sources
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Detail-oriented with strong written communication skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with discretion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry
  • Exposure to financial analysis, market research, or competitive intelligence
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau) a plus
  • Interest in long-term career in corporate strategy, investment banking, or growth advisory
  • Familiar with AI powered research tools

Special Note:

  • This role involves access to non-public strategic information. All candidates will be required to execute a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) prior to beginning work. Adherence to confidentiality protocols is a condition of employment.
