About This Role

The Veterinary Health Center (VHC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our dedicated Central Preparation team. This position is responsible for ensuring surgical packs and other medical instruments are properly decontaminated, cleaned, and reassembled. These items are then sterilized and returned to appropriate sections in a sterile condition. They will also assist in the distribution to hospital personnel and inventory of surgical supplies and other medical commodities. Working hours for this position will include Monday-Friday, 10am-7pm and participation in the rotating on-call schedule for weekends and holidays.

Worksite Description

This position is On-site.

All employees must reside in the United States when they begin working to comply with state law. K-State is unable to provide remote or hybrid work opportunities for residents of the state of Idaho.


What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Requires a high school diploma (or equivalent)
  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Requirements may be met through a combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • CRCST, CBSPD or other associated Certifications
  • Prefer a minimum of one year experience in sterile processing and/or operating room.
  • Hospital experience in sterilizer operation, biomedical equipment operation and maintenance, supply and/or pharmaceutical stocking and distribution, or similar responsibilities.
  • Ability to read supply requisition forms, maintain records and a daily running inventory of materials stocked, dispensed, and requested.
  • Ability to interpret quality control monitors (i.e. autoclave tape color changes, internal pack sensitivity discs, etc.) which relate to degree of sterilization gained during processing of surgical instrument and supply packs.
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations, to include familiarity with concepts of database management programs.
  • Initiative to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment difficulties without being directly supervised (i.e. automatically check equipment performance and cleanliness each time it is requested to the employee).


Additional Role Information:



  • Position frequently involves light work, including walking and standing while retrieving and dispensing supplies.
  • Occasional periods of medium work are required while assisting with freight deliveries and/or stocking from large packing boxes of supplies.
  • Ability to transport an average sized box - approximately 50 pounds, requiring considerable physical exertion.
  • Work is generally performed by walking, sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, fingering, pushing and pulling to perform various task associated with this work area. Hearing is necessary to send and receive phone orders and sight is necessary to read supply request forms, autoclave quality control charts, and to locate correct supply items from inventory.
